As a rough walking reference, Cleveland Clinic describes about 4 mph (a 15-minute mile) as a good walking pace, but says to adapt it to your fitness. Its guidance does not define a universal jogging speed; jogging is better understood as a steady, endurance-focused effort. For running, build up gradually rather than jumping straight to a fast setting.
What treadmill speed should you use?
| Activity or situation | Useful reference | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| Walking | About 4 mph, or a 15-minute mile, is Cleveland Clinic’s reference for a good walking pace. | This is not a minimum or requirement. Choose a slower speed if needed to walk comfortably and consistently. Cleveland Clinic’s walking and running guide emphasizes adapting pace to fitness. |
| Jogging | No universal mph range is established in the cited guidance. | Use a steady, controlled pace focused on endurance and good steps, rather than chasing a speed cutoff. Cleveland Clinic’s jogging guidance describes jogging this way. |
| Running as a beginner | After building comfortable walking, try one minute of relaxed running followed by two minutes of walking. | Treat this as a progression example, not a mandatory interval prescription. Adjust it to health, fitness and how you feel. Cleveland Clinic’s beginner running advice recommends this gradual approach. |
These references describe effort and progression, not formal scientific boundaries between walking, jogging and running. If a pace makes you lose control, feel overly tired or unable to continue comfortably, lower the treadmill speed.
How to find a sustainable pace
- Warm up slowly. Begin with at least five minutes of easy walking before increasing speed. Cleveland Clinic recommends a slow start for treadmill cardio in its treadmill workout guidance.
- Increase speed in small steps. Move up until the pace feels purposeful but remains comfortable enough to maintain. Mayo Clinic advises building gradually to a pace you can sustain for five to ten minutes without becoming overly tired; its fitness-starting guidance also recommends warming up and cooling down.
- Keep the effort controlled. Walking can be slower than 4 mph and still be appropriate. For jogging, favor a steady rhythm over a particular number on the display.
- Separate speed from incline progression. First get used to your chosen speed over several sessions; then consider increasing incline. Cleveland Clinic advises allowing the body to adapt to speed before raising incline.
Starting a run-walk workout
If you are new to running, first establish walking at a comfortable pace. When that feels manageable, a simple starting pattern is one minute of relaxed running followed by two minutes of walking. Repeat only as feels appropriate, and adjust the intervals to your health and fitness. Cleveland Clinic’s Dr. Lisa Rex says the concept can be adjusted based on overall health, fitness level and how you feel.
There is no need to force a run interval at a particular mph. Pick a speed that lets you run with control and return to walking without feeling overwhelmed. If you cannot sustain it comfortably, reduce the speed or keep walking and try again later.

Check that your treadmill suits the activity
A speed setting is useful only if the machine can reach it. Cleveland Clinic reports that walking pads tend to top out around 5 mph, while a high-end treadmill may reach 15 mph. Those are category-level examples, not specifications for every product. Check the maximum speed listed for the exact model before choosing a machine for jogging or running. Cleveland Clinic’s walking-pad overview provides that equipment context.
Do not mistake workout formats or weekly targets for speed prescriptions
The 12-3-30 routine means 12% incline, 3 mph and 30 minutes. It is a named workout format, not a recommended speed for everyone or a definition of walking pace. Cleveland Clinic says to adapt its speed, incline and duration to your fitness and tolerance in its 12-3-30 explanation.

Those are duration targets, not instructions to use a particular treadmill speed. See its walking-versus-running guidance for context.
