Sony rates the WH-1000XM5 for up to 30 hours of music playback with noise canceling on or up to 40 hours with it off. It can stay connected to two Bluetooth devices, supports listening through its stereo mini jack, and is not waterproof.
How long does the Sony WH-1000XM5 battery last?
Sony’s headline specifications give the WH-1000XM5 a maximum of 30 hours of continuous music playback with noise canceling on and 40 hours with noise canceling off. Those are manufacturer figures, not a guarantee of everyday runtime: Sony says operating time varies with use conditions.
Sony’s Help Guide also lists maximum playback times by Bluetooth codec. Its figures show that codec choice affects the published estimate:
| Codec | Noise canceling on | Noise canceling off |
|---|---|---|
| LDAC | Up to 26 hours | Up to 36 hours |
| AAC | Up to 30 hours | Up to 40 hours |
| SBC | Up to 28 hours | Up to 38 hours |
These are Sony’s maximum playback specifications; the Help Guide separately identifies noise canceling and ambient-sound settings, while Sony’s headline specification presents the noise-canceling-on/off figures. For the exact conditions and caveats, see Sony’s WH-1000XM5 specifications and Help Guide operating-time table.

Sony lists charging time as approximately 3.5 hours. The actual time can vary with conditions.
Does the WH-1000XM5 support multipoint?

Two simultaneous connections do not mean that the headphones play audio from both devices at the same time: playback switches between sources. Sony’s multipoint connection instructions explain how to set up the feature. Sony renamed Headphones Connect to Sony | Sound Connect from October 2024; the displayed app name may depend on your region or software version.

Can you use the WH-1000XM5 with a cable?
Yes. The headphones have a stereo mini jack and support passive wired operation. Sony lists a detachable connection cable in the box, so a separate cable is not required for ordinary wired listening if the included one is available. If you need a replacement, check that its connectors fit the headphones and your audio source.

Are the Sony WH-1000XM5 water-resistant?
Sony states plainly in the model’s Help Guide: “The headset is not waterproof.” Sony also warns that charging the headphones while they are wet from rain or sweat can cause burnout or malfunction. Do not charge them while damp, and avoid exposing them to rain, heavy sweat, or rinsing them. The cited Sony materials do not establish an IP water-resistance rating.
