Maybe—but falling prices and yields alone do not show that crypto is a bargain or that an investment will recover. The decision depends on what is producing the return, how much risk you can tolerate, and whether you can afford to lose the money. A token’s price return, protocol staking rewards, interest from a crypto lending account, and an exchange-traded product’s return are different things and carry different risks.
What do the latest price and rate snapshots show?
Selected-date figures from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis’s FRED table show lower Bitcoin and Ethereum prices on October 6, 2026, than on the same date in 2025. They describe two points in time; they do not show the full path between them, explain why prices changed, establish that either asset is undervalued, or predict what happens next.
| Measure | Earlier observation | Later observation |
|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin price (FRED) | $121,393.95 on October 6, 2025 | $85,499.09 on October 6, 2026 |
| Ethereum price (FRED) | $4,449.80 on October 6, 2025 | $2,695.73 on October 6, 2026 |
| Four-week Treasury bill secondary-market rate (Federal Reserve H.15) | Not stated here for October 6, 2025 | 3.88% on October 5, 2026 |
| Effective federal funds rate (Federal Reserve H.15) | Not stated here for October 6, 2025 | 3.88% through October 5, 2026 |
The crypto prices are FRED observations for the stated dates; the rates are from the Federal Reserve Board’s H.15 release dated October 6, 2026. The Treasury bill rate is a short-term market yield, not a crypto return or a promise that cash will outperform crypto over any particular period. It does, however, give savers a dated alternative to consider rather than treating a crypto yield offer in isolation.
Why a falling token price or yield is not a buy signal
A lower price changes the entry point, not the risk by itself
A price decline can make an asset cheaper than it was before, but “cheaper than last year” is not the same as “undervalued.” A buyer still needs a reasoned view of what could support future demand and what could invalidate that view. The cited price snapshots cannot identify a market bottom or establish a likely recovery.

A lower advertised yield does not make the asset safer
“Yield” can refer to different arrangements: rewards associated with protocol staking, interest offered by a crypto company that lends or otherwise uses customer assets, or simply an expected return from an exchange-traded product’s price movement. A quoted rate may change with protocol parameters, participation, provider terms, fees, or market conditions. The official sources cited here do not establish a representative current crypto staking or lending rate, so a single general figure would be misleading.
Before relying on a rate, identify the asset, protocol or provider, country, observation date, fees, whether the rate is variable or promotional, any lockup or withdrawal limits, and what could happen if the provider or protocol fails. A displayed percentage is not a guarantee of either payment or recovery of principal.

What kind of crypto return are you considering?
Holding a token
For a direct token holding, the result depends primarily on the token’s market price when you sell, alongside any costs and applicable tax treatment. A token can fall further or become difficult to trade. A lower purchase price does not cap potential losses or ensure that buyers will return.
Protocol staking
Staking involves participating in a blockchain protocol’s validation or related process, directly or through an intermediary. The process, eligibility, withdrawal timing, and possible losses depend on the particular asset and arrangement. In its September 25, 2026 staff FAQs, the SEC Division of Corporation Finance says a staking receipt token does not itself guarantee, generate, or set the amount of rewards. The FAQs express staff views, not a rule, regulation, or Commission-approved statement, and do not create legal obligations.

Crypto interest or lending accounts
An account that pays interest is not equivalent to an insured bank or credit-union deposit. The SEC’s February 14, 2022 investor bulletin warned that crypto assets placed with such companies were not insured and that interest depended on the company’s investment activities. The bulletin listed risks including volatility, illiquidity, company failure or bankruptcy, default, fraud, regulatory change, technical problems, hacking, and malware. It is a dated U.S. warning, not a current assessment of every provider or the law in every country; check the actual account agreement and current local protections.
Exchange-traded products
An exchange-traded product (ETP) can provide market exposure without requiring the investor to hold crypto directly, but its share price, fees, structure, and tracking can affect the result. The SEC’s September 9, 2024 investor bulletin describes Bitcoin and Ether as highly speculative and warns that a spot product’s share price may diverge from the underlying crypto price. It distinguishes futures-based products from spot Bitcoin or Ether commodity trusts. The bulletin notes that spot trusts are not ETFs registered under the Investment Company Act of 1940, and that underlying spot trading platforms may lack SEC registration and oversight. For any specific product, read its current prospectus and fee schedule rather than assuming all ETPs work alike.

How to decide whether crypto fits your situation
Use these questions to test the decision, not to forecast a price:
- Could you absorb a substantial loss? Do not put money at risk if losing it would interfere with near-term expenses or essential goals.
- When might you need the money? A short or uncertain time horizon leaves less room to tolerate volatility. Write down what would change your investment thesis before a further decline tests it.
- How concentrated would the exposure be? Consider the size of the proposed allocation alongside other holdings that may share similar risks, not just the number of different tokens.
- What return are you actually counting on? Separate a hoped-for price increase from staking rewards, lending interest, or an ETP’s performance. Check the specific mechanics, charges, withdrawal terms, custody, and possible loss for that route.
- What is the alternative? Compare the decision with options appropriate to your goals and time horizon. The Federal Reserve’s dated bill rate above is a reference point, not a like-for-like or risk-adjusted comparison with crypto.
- If using an ETP, what does it hold and what does it cost? Check whether it is spot or futures-based, how it tracks exposure, what fees apply, and which regulatory protections do or do not apply.
No checklist can determine suitability without a person’s full financial circumstances. This is general educational information, not an individualized buy, hold, or sell recommendation.

What the 2026 U.S. regulatory updates do—and do not—tell investors
On March 17, 2026, the SEC issued a crypto-asset interpretation with CFTC guidance, effective March 23, 2026. It sets out categories including digital commodities, digital collectibles, digital tools, stablecoins, and digital securities, and addresses activities such as airdrops, protocol mining, protocol staking, and wrapping non-security crypto assets. That framework is relevant to how U.S. regulators describe certain assets and activities; it is not a forecast of returns, a guarantee of investor protection, or a complete account of every law that may apply.
The SEC Division of Corporation Finance’s September 2026 FAQs are staff views and expressly are not a rule, regulation, or Commission-approved statement. Regulatory classification and investment merit are separate questions: an asset’s treatment under securities law does not establish that its price will rise, that a reward rate will continue, or that a particular product is suitable for you.
So, is crypto still worth investing in?
It may still fit as a high-risk part of an allocation for someone who can withstand losses and has a reasoned thesis beyond “the price has fallen.” The dated figures show that Bitcoin and Ethereum were below their year-earlier selected-date prices, while short-term Treasury yields offered a measurable alternative. Neither fact settles what those assets will do next. If the case depends on a promised yield, borrowed money, or funds needed soon, examine the terms and downside especially carefully.
