Those are different problems, so change one setting at a time and compare the same scene before deciding whether your GPU is the limit.
First, identify whether the problem is low FPS or stutter
A consistently low frame rate usually points to sustained rendering load: the system is taking too long to render each frame. Intermittent stutter is different. The average FPS may look acceptable while occasional frames take much longer, making motion feel uneven.
NVIDIA’s technical presentation on stutter analysis describes micro-stuttering as uneven frame time and identifies shader compilation, video-memory oversubscription, resource management, and queued frames among possible causes. These are possibilities to investigate, not proof of a particular fault in your game.
Record the settings before changing them
Note the game, GPU, CPU, resolution, path-tracing or ray-tracing level, upscaling mode, and whether frame generation is enabled. Also record when the problem occurs: continuously, every few seconds, on first entering a location, while moving through the world, or after an update. Change one setting at a time and revisit the same scene so you can tell what helped.

Fix consistently low frame rates by reducing rendering load
Start with settings that reduce the work needed to render each frame. Exact names and available choices differ by game, so use the game’s own graphics menu rather than assuming every title has the same presets.
- Lower the path-tracing or ray-tracing level. If the game offers more than one quality level, test a lower one and compare both image quality and responsiveness.
- Reduce output resolution. A lower resolution means fewer pixels to render. Check whether the improvement is worth the change in image clarity on your display.
- Try a supported Super Resolution mode. NVIDIA describes DLSS Super Resolution as reconstructing a higher-resolution output from lower-resolution input. The option and its implementation depend on the game’s integration; see NVIDIA’s DLSS overview and DLSS technology guide.
Compare frame pacing, responsiveness, and image quality alongside the FPS counter. A higher displayed number is not automatically a better experience if controls feel less responsive or motion remains uneven.
Understand what frame generation changes
Frame generation creates additional displayed frames; those frames are not the same as frames the game rendered directly. It can raise the displayed FPS counter without an equivalent increase in base rendering throughput. Test it separately, if the game and hardware support it, and judge responsiveness and frame pacing as well as the counter.

NVIDIA’s DLSS overview describes Multi Frame Generation as capable of generating up to five frames per rendered frame on GeForce RTX 50 Series and RTX PRO Blackwell GPUs with fifth-generation Tensor Cores. That is a feature limit for specified hardware, not a measured result or a promise of a particular playable base frame rate. NVIDIA’s 2022 DLSS 3 announcement also claimed “up to 4x” frame rates compared with rendering without DLSS; that vendor claim is dated and does not predict your result in a particular game.

For Linux users, NVIDIA’s driver guide warns that Smooth Motion and native DLSS Frame Generation are competing methods and should not be enabled together. This warning concerns those two features, not every frame-generation method.
Diagnose intermittent stutter by its trigger
Hitches on a first visit or after an update
Shader compilation can cause stutter. NVIDIA’s Control Panel reference states: “Shader compiles are normally performed each time a game runs and are a common cause of game-play stuttering.” If a hitch occurs the first time you enter an area, or after a game or driver update, allow loading or compilation activity to finish and compare a later pass through the same area.

The same reference explains that a shader cache can avoid compiling the same shaders on subsequent runs. Repeatedly clearing the cache is therefore not a general stutter fix; it can require compilation again.
Hitches during traversal or at recurring intervals
Check the game’s performance or VRAM overlay if it has one. If video memory appears pressured, close unnecessary GPU-heavy applications and test lower texture or rendering settings. These checks can help identify memory pressure, but they are not guaranteed to resolve every hitch.

If the cause is still unclear, note frame-time spikes and whether CPU or GPU workload changes sharply around them. NVIDIA’s stutter analysis discusses delayed frames and frame times; its RTXPT project points technically advanced users to Nsight Graphics for frame capture and analysis. Nsight is an optional diagnostic tool, not a requirement for ordinary troubleshooting.

Hitches that began after a game or driver change
Update the game and graphics driver through their official channels if the problem began after an update. If it appeared immediately after a driver change, compare with the prior known-good setup where feasible. The sources cited here do not establish one universally best driver version, so a specific version should only be recommended after checking the affected game and hardware.
If FPS is acceptable but motion still looks uneven
Frame-time pacing and screen tearing are separate from sustained rendering speed. A compatible variable-refresh display may reduce tearing or presentation stutter, but it cannot make the game render more frames or remove the path-tracing workload. Check whether the issue is uneven delivery of frames or tearing before considering display settings or hardware.

Do not choose an upgrade from the words “path tracing” alone. First use the settings tests and available performance indicators to establish that the GPU is limiting the game. Then check the official system requirements and feature support for the specific title. Requirements vary by game; the DXR-capable-GPU requirement listed for NVIDIA’s RTXPT project applies to that project, not universally to every game with path tracing.

What the DLSS options mean
Depending on the game’s integration and version, its DLSS menu may offer different features. NVIDIA describes their roles as follows:
- Super Resolution: reconstructs a higher-resolution output from lower-resolution input.
- Frame Generation: generates additional frames for display rather than increasing the count of directly rendered base frames by the same amount.
- Ray Reconstruction: uses AI reconstruction in place of traditional denoising.
- DLAA: applies anti-aliasing at native resolution rather than using Super Resolution to upscale a lower-resolution input.
Availability depends on the title’s implementation; a feature described by NVIDIA may not appear in every game’s settings.
