A heavy rubber or fitness mat may reduce sound reverberating through the floor, but it is not a guaranteed way to stop vibration from travelling through a building.
First, identify the kind of noise
Some sound is part of normal operation. Horizon Fitness says the belt and rollers can make a regular thumping sound, particularly on a new treadmill, and that it may lessen as the belt settles. A new rattle or squeak, or noise accompanied by vibration you can feel, calls for a closer look.
If you feel vibration along with the noise, stop the treadmill and check for loose hardware or a foreign object touching the belt—both are issues Horizon flags for investigation. If the noise continues or the machine appears damaged, contact the manufacturer or qualified service support instead of attempting an improvised repair. Horizon Fitness: treadmill noise FAQ
Check placement and the floor
- Confirm that the treadmill stands steadily and is level. Use its leveling feet and follow the owner’s manual.
- Inspect for loose hardware and anything touching the belt.
- Consider the floor and room: Horizon says carpeted concrete has less reverberation than a wood overlay floor, and nearby walls can reflect sound.
- Avoid assuming that a particular room placement will work for every home. The available manufacturer guidance does not provide a controlled comparison of floor or room setups.

Try a mat, but keep expectations realistic
A heavy rubber or fitness mat is a reasonable option beneath a treadmill. Horizon says it may reduce reverberation through the floor, and Decathlon recommends a standard floor mat for its T540C. A mat may also help protect the floor, but the cited guidance does not establish a universally effective material or thickness, quantify vibration reduction, or show that a mat will eliminate sound transmitted through a building.
Choose a mat that fits the treadmill footprint and is compatible with the floor. The available sources do not establish which brand or thickness performs best.

Follow the maintenance schedule for your model
Check fasteners and belt condition as directed by the owner’s manual. Maintenance intervals are not universal: Decathlon’s T540C support page recommends tightening screws and bolts monthly and lubricating the running belt after 200 hours. Those instructions apply to that model; do not transfer its schedule or lubricant recommendation to another treadmill without checking that machine’s documentation. Decathlon UK: T540C support

Decathlon reports 70 dBA for the T520B at maximum speed without a runner, measured one metre from the treadmill and 1.60 metres above the ground. The page does not state a year. This is a manufacturer-reported figure for one model under those conditions, not a general noise benchmark or a comparison of treadmill models. Decathlon UK: T520B support
