It is a gradual preview rollout for Windows Insiders in the Experimental channel—not a change every Windows 11 user can access yet.
What changed in Windows 11 Search?
Microsoft announced the redesign on July 13, 2026, describing it as an effort to make Search faster, more relevant, and easier to use. The changes affect the Search home screen, result presentation, ranking, and reliability.
A less cluttered Search home
The updated home screen is intended to reduce visual clutter and make it easier to return to recent searches.
Clearer result types and fewer promotions
Results more clearly identify whether they are apps, settings, files, web results, or Microsoft Store suggestions. Microsoft says it removed promotional content from web results so the most relevant answer appears first.

More control over web and Store suggestions
A new setting under Settings > Privacy & Security > Search lets users choose whether web and Microsoft Store suggestions appear alongside local results. Microsoft says local apps, settings, and files should rank ahead of web and Store suggestions when they are the stronger match. It also says that This PC and Recycle Bin should be easier to find.
More forgiving app and file searches
App search is being tuned to handle typos, missing or extra letters, and partial words. For example, Microsoft says searching for “utlook” can still find Outlook. File search adds support for two-character queries and is intended to surface cloud or connected files more effectively when they are the stronger match.

Settings ranking and reliability
Microsoft says it is making an initial round of improvements to Settings ranking, with more tuning planned. It is also working to reduce Search crashes and loading problems. The announcement does not give a performance percentage or other quantified result for these changes.
How to control web and Store suggestions
If the new control has reached your device, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Search and use the setting for web and Microsoft Store suggestions to decide whether those suggestions appear alongside local results. Microsoft does not specify the setting’s exact label in its announcement.

Which Insider build has the redesign?
Microsoft’s July 13 announcement ties the changes to Experimental Preview Build 26300.8772, which was released on July 6, 2026. The July 13 build-notes update points readers to the Search announcement. The specific Search changes are not confirmed for every recent Insider build.

The redesign is rolling out gradually to Windows Insiders in the Experimental channel through Controlled Feature Rollout. That staged distribution means eligible testers may not see it immediately. Microsoft also says experiences can vary by region, and feature flags can expose the changes.

The Experimental channel provides early access to features and ideas in active development. Microsoft cautions that features may change, be removed, or never ship beyond Insider builds. A different Search experience therefore does not mean the redesign has reached all Windows 11 users, and testers should not treat the preview as a final release.
