Make sure you have the right quest and jar
The title “Ghost in the Portrait” does not identify a game or quest by name. The closest match is Withermoore’s Soul Jar in Divinity: Original Sin 2, which takes place in Fort Joy. The steps below apply if that is the quest you mean.
In the Ancient Passage, look for the northwest soul jar. Its plaque reads “Here lies Withermoore the Supplicant.” Several jars look alike, and choosing another can trigger traps or a guardian fight. The quest route and jar identification are documented in the Withermoore’s Soul Jar guide.
Reach the Ancient Passage
- If you have not started the quest: find Withermoore in the Forgotten Cell and remove the spear pinning him. The guide lists three options: a character with at least 12 Strength, at least 1 Telekinesis, or breaking the spear. Breaking it means you do not recover the weapon.
- Find the passage entrance: go to the statue or shrine in the Fort Joy courtyard and locate the hatch beyond it. Follow the prison route. A Wits check reveals a lever near the altar; use it to expose the hatch to the Ancient Passage.
- Find the marked jar: once inside, go to the northwest jar and read its plaque before interacting with it.
Landmarks are more reliable than coordinates, which can be presented differently depending on the platform or interface.

Choose what to do with Withermoore’s soul jar
Destroying the correct jar is a documented way to free Withermoore. Returning it to him is another available choice. The guide also describes a dialogue route in which you refuse to hand the jar back and have another party member destroy it. These are quest choices, not guaranteed remedies for an open journal entry.

If the journal still says the quest is incomplete
- Check the jar’s plaque and confirm you interacted with the northwest jar, not one of the other four.
- Review the journal for the objective it recorded. An unfinished entry after destroying the marked jar has been reported by players, and forum replies disagree about whether that means a bug or a quest that has another beat.
- If you later reach Braccus Rex’s tower, try interacting with the source gate. A Steam discussion reports this as a possible later interaction where Withermoore may appear and the quest may complete. If the objective remains blocked after that, the available reports do not establish a reproducible fix across current PC, console, or later-edition versions. The platform and game version matter when assessing whether a specific bug is occurring; do not assume that reloading, changing party order, or another generic workaround will solve it.
