For a new workflow you want to reuse across chats, have Gemini apply when relevant, or combine with other instructions, choose a Skill. A Gem is a good fit when you want a dedicated customized Gemini setup with its own instructions and knowledge files. But Google has announced that Gems will transition to Skills: starting in November 2026 for personal Google Accounts and in 2027 for work and school accounts. Check the options available in your account before building a long-term workflow around either feature.
What is the difference between a Gemini Gem and a Skill?
Both features let you give Gemini reusable instructions and context for recurring work, but they are organized differently. Google describes Gems as customized versions of Gemini for recurring tasks and deeper expertise. A Gem can save instructions for a particular assistant setup and use added knowledge files as context. Google’s Gems help describes them as a way to give Gemini “specific and repeatable instructions.”
A Skill is a set of reusable instructions and additional context. Google says Skills can be reused across chats, applied automatically when Gemini considers them relevant, explicitly selected, and combined with other Skills. See Google’s Skills guide for the current feature description and availability details.
| What matters for your workflow | Gem | Skill |
|---|---|---|
| Core setup | A customized Gemini experience with saved instructions; it can also use knowledge files as context. | Reusable instructions and additional context. |
| Reuse across chats | Designed around a dedicated recurring assistant setup. | Can be reused across chats. |
| Automatic application | Not established in the cited Gems documentation. | Gemini may apply a Skill automatically when it considers it relevant. |
| Combine with other instructions | Not established in the cited Gems documentation. | Multiple Skills can be used together. |
| Transition status | Google has announced a future transition to Skills, with timing depending on account type. | The destination for the announced Gems transition; availability is still rolling out. |
This is a comparison of documented functions, not a measured difference in answer quality or speed. Google’s cited help pages do not establish that one feature is more accurate or saves a specific amount of time.

Which one should you use?
Choose a Skill for cross-chat workflows
Use a Skill when the same instructions should be available across different chats rather than live only in one customized assistant setup. Skills are also the better fit when you want Gemini to apply relevant instructions automatically or combine multiple sets of instructions for a larger workflow.
Choose a Gem for a dedicated assistant setup
A Gem can suit a recurring task that benefits from its own customized Gemini experience, saved instructions, and knowledge files. For example, a Gem can keep task-specific context alongside the instructions for that assistant. This is a functional distinction, not evidence that Gems produce better answers.

For a new long-term workflow, factor in the transition
If you are starting from scratch and expect to keep a workflow for a long time, Skills are the more future-oriented choice given Google’s announced transition. If a Gem’s dedicated setup is important to how you work, you can use it while it remains available, but plan to move its instructions and relevant files when the transition reaches your account.

Google’s Gems-to-Skills transition page says the transition is planned to start in November 2026 for personal Google Accounts and in 2027 for work and school accounts. These are announced future dates as of October 7, 2026; they do not mean the transition has already happened. Google says it will automatically recreate Gems as Skills when Gems go away. The rollout and eligibility may vary by account, so check Gemini Apps for the features currently available to you.

Google also documents a manual migration option: copy a Gem’s name, description, and instructions, then transfer any knowledge files you still need through the Skill upload workflow. The transition page provides the current steps. Skills are gradually rolling out, and Google’s Skills guide says they are available without a Google AI subscription; platform support and interface details may change.
