Gemini Skills and ChatGPT custom GPTs both let you reuse AI instructions, but they are not interchangeable. Gemini Apps Skills package instructions with context and reference files; custom GPTs can also be configured with capabilities, connected apps, and API actions. Which is the closer fit depends on the account and product surface you can use—and that matters especially because OpenAI says custom GPTs are planned to retire and migrate to Plugins.
Terminology: “Gemini Skills” can refer to Skills in the Gemini app or Agent Skills in Gemini CLI. This comparison is about consumer-facing Gemini Apps Skills unless the CLI section is explicitly labeled.
What is the difference between Gemini Skills and custom GPTs?
Google describes a Gemini Apps Skill as “a set of reusable instructions and additional context.” A custom GPT is a configured ChatGPT assistant: its instructions can be combined with knowledge files, selected capabilities, apps, or custom API actions.
Both features help you avoid repeating instructions. Their packaging and integrations differ, and neither should be assumed to be a one-for-one replacement for the other.

| What is reusable? | Instructions and additional context, applied when relevant or when you invoke the Skill. | A configured assistant’s instructions, with optional knowledge, capabilities, apps, or actions. |
| What supporting material can it use? | A SKILL.md or folder upload with a root SKILL.md and supported reference files. |

| Can it connect to services or APIs? | The Gemini Apps Skills help describes instructions and context; it does not establish arbitrary API actions for these Skills. | It may use apps or custom API actions. A GPT cannot use apps and actions together. |
| Who can create one now? | Eligible users with a personal Google Account, Keep Activity enabled, and age 18 or older, as the current help page specifies; rollout is gradual. | Eligible Business, Enterprise, and Edu workspace users, subject to permissions. How do Gemini Skills and custom GPTs handle files and integrations?
Gemini Apps Skills: reusable instructions with reference files
Google’s Gemini Apps Skills help describes several ways to create a Skill: build one with Gemini, start from a recommended template, create it manually, or upload a file or folder. For an uploaded project, the main folder needs a SKILL.md. The help page lists supported text-based files and some media; reference files need to be uploaded with the Skill.
A Skill may be applied automatically when relevant or invoked explicitly. The help page says internet-dependent scripts and external website actions are not supported. Its description does not establish that consumer Gemini Apps Skills can make arbitrary API calls, so do not assume they match custom GPT Actions.

Custom GPTs: knowledge, capabilities, apps, or API actions
OpenAI’s GPT creation guide describes instructions, uploaded knowledge, and capabilities including web search, image generation, Canvas, and Data Analysis. Depending on the configuration, a GPT may also use connected apps or custom actions to call external APIs.
Custom actions require API details, authentication, and an OpenAPI JSON or YAML schema, according to OpenAI’s actions guide. A GPT can use apps or actions, but not both in the same GPT. That makes custom GPTs a more explicit option when a workflow needs a documented external API connection; it does not mean every GPT includes one.

Gemini Apps Skills availability
Google’s current Skills help page says access is rolling out gradually. It specifies a personal Google Account, Keep Activity turned on, and an age of 18 or older; work and school accounts are not currently eligible. The page also limits use to the Gemini app surfaces listed in its current version, including mobile, Mac app, and web. Availability should not be generalized to every Gemini user or account type.
Separately, Google’s Workspace Updates post announced a planned broad app rollout beginning October 13, 2026, expected to complete by mid-November. That is a rollout plan, not confirmation that it has completed; eligibility and timing may differ by user and workspace.

Custom GPT creation and use
OpenAI’s current creation guide says personal Free, Go, Plus, and Pro accounts cannot create or publish new GPTs. Existing GPTs may remain usable, and editing depends on plan and permissions. Business, Enterprise, and Edu users may create, edit, and publish where their workspace permissions allow. Creation takes place on the web; the mobile app supports using GPTs but not creating them.
What should a Gemini CLI user know about Agent Skills?
Gemini CLI Agent Skills are a separate, developer-facing feature. The Gemini CLI documentation describes self-contained directories that can bundle instructions and assets. The CLI discovers Skills from built-in, extension, user, and workspace locations; it can load names and descriptions first, then activate a matching Skill when needed. Activation may require user confirmation and grants access to bundled paths. The documentation identifies .agents/skills/ as an interoperable alias.

Those folder-based CLI workflows are not the same thing as Skills in the consumer Gemini app. Likewise, the shared word “skill” does not establish direct import or full feature parity between Gemini CLI Agent Skills, Gemini Apps Skills, and ChatGPT custom GPTs.

OpenAI’s custom GPT retirement and migration FAQ says retirement is planned across ChatGPT plans, with migration to Plugins. It gives December 11, 2026 as the scheduled Enterprise retirement date. The FAQ says migration timing and Plugin availability may vary by account or workspace, so treat the date as OpenAI’s current plan rather than a guarantee that every user’s transition will happen identically.
OpenAI describes ChatGPT Skills as reusable workflows with instructions and supporting resources, and Plugins as able to combine Skills with connected apps and other elements. Some Skills need no external service connection. These descriptions do not establish that migration will reproduce every custom GPT’s knowledge, capabilities, sharing, or action setup. If you depend on an existing GPT, check its creator’s guidance and any in-product notice, then verify that the proposed replacement supports the parts of the workflow you actually use.
Quick Recap
Which option should you choose?
- Choose Gemini Apps Skills if you have access to the Gemini app feature and mainly want reusable guidance with accompanying context or reference files.
- Choose a custom GPT if your eligible ChatGPT workspace supports creation and your workflow benefits from configuring knowledge, capabilities, connected apps, or a defined API action.
- For an existing GPT, plan around the migration notice. Do not assume a Skill or Plugin is equivalent until you have checked the relevant files, integrations, and behavior in your account.
- For developer-agent workflows, compare the actual surfaces. Gemini CLI Agent Skills are a separate implementation from consumer Gemini Apps Skills, and the name alone does not establish portability.
