Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStart by checking for a firmware update in Sony’s smartphone app, then set the noise-control button for the places you use the headphones. Adjust the equalizer only if the default sound does not suit you, and try automatic features such as Speak-to-Chat only if they fit your routine. This is a practical setup order—not an official Sony ranking.
Where to change WH-1000XM5 settings
Use Sony’s smartphone app, currently named Sony | Sound Connect. The WH-1000XM5 Help Guide refers to it by its former name, Headphones Connect. Sony documents controls for noise canceling, ambient sound, equalizer, software updates, and other model features in the app. Available functions can vary by headphone model, and Sony notes that app specifications and screen design may change. Sony says the app has no PC version, although selected configurations carry over when you use the headphones with a PC.
1. Check for a software update
Connect the headphones to the app and look for an update notification. Sony recommends using the latest headset software and says the app notifies you when an update is available. Sony’s US WH-1000XM5 support page listed firmware version 2.5.1, released December 18, 2025, when checked for this article. That listing can change, so use the app or support page to confirm the version currently offered.
2. Choose noise canceling or ambient sound for your routine
Noise canceling reduces surrounding sound; ambient sound mode lets more of it through. Choose based on where you are and how much awareness you need, rather than treating either mode as best in every situation. Sony explains the modes in its WH-1000XM5 noise-canceling guide.

Set the NC/AMB button
The physical NC/AMB button switches between noise-control modes. In Sound Connect, you can configure which states the button cycles through, including an off state. Set the cycle to include the options you actually use so you do not have to step through unwanted modes.
Leave Auto NC Optimizer to do its job
Auto NC Optimizer is automatic; it is not a noise-canceling level you need to set manually. Sony says it adjusts based on factors including how the headphones are worn and the surrounding environment. As fit or conditions change, the perceived effect can fluctuate; Sony describes this behavior in its Auto NC Optimizer guide.

3. Change the equalizer only if you want a different balance
The app’s equalizer lets you adjust frequency balance to suit your preference or content. Sony describes options for warmer or brighter sound and for emphasizing vocals, bass, or treble. Try modest changes and compare them with the default setting. Sony’s materials do not identify one equalizer preset as best for every listener.
4. Decide whether automatic features belong in your setup
Speak-to-Chat
Speak-to-Chat is off by default. When enabled, it can pause or mute playback and capture conversation after you speak. You can enable or disable it by holding two fingers on the touch sensor, or adjust its sensitivity and timeout in the app. Sony warns it can trigger unintentionally—for example, when coughing, humming, brushing your teeth, or in response to environmental sounds. Try it if you often need to talk without removing the headphones; otherwise, leave it off or lower its sensitivity. See Sony’s Speak-to-Chat guide.

Adaptive Sound Control
The WH-1000XM5 app guide also lists Adaptive Sound Control, which adjusts noise canceling based on recognized behavior. It is an optional convenience to try if automatic adjustments suit your routine; keep your noise-control choices manual if you prefer predictable settings. Sony lists it among the features in the app guide.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which settings should stay personal?
| Choice | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Noise canceling | Reducing surrounding sound is the priority. | Less awareness of nearby sounds. |
| Ambient sound | You want more of the environment to come through. | More surrounding sound reaches you. |
| Automatic noise control | You want the headphones to respond to behavior or changing conditions. | Adjustments may be less predictable than a fixed choice. |
| Equalizer changes | You prefer a different frequency balance from the default. | The result is a personal preference, not a universal improvement. |
These are context and preference decisions. Sony’s official materials do not establish a single best configuration for all WH-1000XM5 owners.
