To compare crypto ETFs, look at three different things: the fund’s recurring costs, its net asset value (NAV), and how its returns compare with a named benchmark. Then check the exchange price you would actually pay. These measures are related, but they are not interchangeable: fees can reduce fund returns, NAV is a calculated per-share value, and tracking error describes benchmark-relative performance.

The examples below are from U.S. Bitcoin ETF filings and are fund-specific. Other crypto products, strategies, and jurisdictions may use different fee terms, valuation methods, or benchmarks.

What an expense ratio or sponsor fee tells you

An expense ratio is the disclosed annual rate of a fund’s operating expenses. Some spot products instead highlight a recurring sponsor fee. Either figure helps describe fund-level costs, which reduce the assets or returns attributable to shareholders over time.

Do not assume the stated rate is the investor’s total cost. A prospectus may exclude brokerage commissions and charges imposed by financial intermediaries. Check the current fee table for the specific fund, including other expenses, any waiver, who qualifies for it, and when it expires.

For a dated example, Grayscale reported a 0.15% management fee for the Grayscale Bitcoin Mini Trust ETF in its fact sheet with figures as of March 31, 2026. That is one product’s disclosed figure at that date, not an industry average or a claim about its current fee. Grayscale Bitcoin Mini Trust ETF fact sheet filed April 23, 2026.

What NAV is—and why it is not the trading price

NAV is the per-share value calculated from a fund’s assets minus its liabilities under its valuation policy. A Bitcoin Trust filing describes calculating NAV each business day by totaling bitcoin and other assets, then subtracting liabilities, including accrued unpaid expenses. SEC filing describing NAV calculation for the period ended June 30, 2026.

The valuation source and timing matter. Bitwise’s prospectus says its NAV references the CME CF Bitcoin Reference Rate – New York Variant, which is calculated from aggregated executed trade flow on major bitcoin trading platforms. A fund’s reference rate is not a universal bitcoin price, and another fund may use a different benchmark or valuation policy. Bitwise Bitcoin ETF prospectus (2025).

ETF shares trade on an exchange, so their market price can be above or below NAV. CoinShares’ SEC registration filing explicitly notes that shares may trade at a premium or discount to NAV. NAV describes the fund’s calculated value; the market price is what a buyer or seller can transact at, and that difference affects execution and realized returns. What tracking error measures

Tracking error concerns the difference or variability between a fund’s returns and those of its stated benchmark over a defined period. It is not another name for the expense ratio. Fees and liabilities can contribute to a fund lagging a benchmark, while benchmark design, valuation timing, trading, and market-price premiums or discounts can also affect comparisons.

Read the exact measure and its context. Average daily tracking error, cumulative return difference, and a stated tracking objective are not automatically comparable. A 2022 SEC filing for a Bitcoin futures fund says: “The Fund will endeavor to trade in Bitcoin Futures Contracts so that the Fund’s average daily tracking error against the Benchmark will be less than 10 percent over any period of 30 trading days.” This is that futures fund’s stated objective, not a universal threshold, a realized result, or a guarantee for spot Bitcoin ETFs. Why the benchmark and its history matter

A return comparison is meaningful only if you know which benchmark was used during the period. In a prospectus supplement, ARK 21Shares said that effective August 27, 2026, the Trust began using the FTSE Bitcoin Index, replacing the CME CF Bitcoin Reference Rate – New York Variant. The same disclosure says the fund seeks to track index performance adjusted for expenses and liabilities. A comparison spanning that change should account for which index was in force at each point. A practical checklist for comparing crypto ETFs

  1. Compare fund costs. Read the annual operating-expense or sponsor-fee disclosure, other stated costs, and the conditions and end date of any waiver. Remember that brokerage and intermediary charges may be separate.
  2. Identify the benchmark. Record the benchmark name, index administrator, methodology, and any date on which the fund changed benchmarks.
  3. Check the NAV policy. Find the valuation source, calculation time, and how liabilities and accrued expenses are treated.
  4. Check market price against NAV. For the time you plan to trade, review whether shares are at a premium or discount; this is distinct from the fund’s NAV return.
  5. Match the performance measure. Use the same dates and return basis, and determine whether a reported figure is tracking error, cumulative return difference, an objective, or an estimate.
  6. Compare like strategies. Spot-holding, futures, leveraged, hedged, and active funds are not interchangeable. Differences in strategy can make a simple return comparison misleading.
