How do Discord Nitro themes and third-party mods differ?

Are Discord themes safe?
If by “safe” you mean supported by Discord’s written rules, use the built-in Appearance settings or Nitro themes. Discord’s Terms of Service, accessed October 7, 2026, prohibit “using any unauthorized software designed to modify the services.” The terms also restrict modifying Discord software unless Discord gives written consent or applicable law permits it.
Discord’s Platform Manipulation Policy Explainer, dated March 15, 2024 and marked current, also says that modifying the Discord client “for the purpose of spam or any other reason” is not allowed under that policy. These written restrictions make third-party client mods a policy risk. They do not establish a specific enforcement rate for theme-only mods, so there is no substantiated ban probability to quote.
There is a separate software-security question: whether a particular mod or theme could expose users to harmful code, unwanted data collection, or other risks. BetterDiscord’s theme guidelines bar add-ons that pose ban risks, disable security features, access private information, or collect data without opt-in consent. Those are BetterDiscord project rules for its ecosystem—not Discord approval, independent proof that every theme is safe, or a guarantee against harm.

What customization does Discord support?
Standard Appearance settings
Discord’s Appearance guide, updated June 27, 2026, lists Light, Ash, Dark, Onyx, and Sync with computer for desktop. On mobile, it lists Light, Dark, Midnight, and Automatic. The available choices differ between platforms, and themes may look different on mobile and desktop.
The guide also covers zoom, chat font scaling, message spacing, and message display options. If “Sync across clients” is enabled, themes can sync across desktop, mobile, and browser.

Nitro custom themes
Nitro subscribers can use additional themes and create custom ones. Discord lets them choose a Light or Dark palette, select colors with a color picker or hex code, and build a gradient with up to five colors while adjusting its direction and intensity. Custom themes may affect mobile when cross-client sync is enabled.
On desktop and browser, Nitro subscribers can share, preview, and apply themes. On mobile, Discord supports previewing and applying them. Non-Nitro users can preview themes on desktop, but applying custom themes is a Nitro feature. Discord’s Nitro feature comparison lists Color Themes and Custom Themes as Nitro perks; it lists app-icon customization among Nitro Basic perks, not app-wide custom themes.

Can you use custom Discord themes without Nitro?
You can preview available custom themes on desktop without Nitro, according to Discord’s Appearance guide. To apply custom themes through Discord’s supported feature, Discord identifies Nitro as the requirement. Standard built-in Appearance options remain available separately.
A third-party mod may offer other visual changes, but that is not an equivalent supported workaround: Discord’s terms restrict unauthorized software designed to modify its services, and BetterDiscord acknowledges that it is against those terms.

How do you change Discord themes?
Choose a built-in theme
- Open Discord’s Appearance settings on your device.
- Choose one of the theme options listed for that platform. Desktop and mobile choices differ; desktop also lists “Sync with computer.”
- If you want the theme to carry across desktop, mobile, and browser, check whether “Sync across clients” is enabled.
Apply a Nitro custom theme
- Open the theme options in Discord’s Appearance settings.
- Choose a custom theme or create one by selecting a Light or Dark palette and choosing colors with the picker or a hex code.
- For a gradient, add up to five colors, then adjust its direction and intensity.
- Preview and apply the theme on the platform you are using. Discord documents sharing, preview, and apply on desktop and browser; mobile supports preview and apply.
Discord may change settings labels or availability over time. Its current guide is the reference for platform-specific options.

For a visual change without taking on the written policy conflict or trusting separate client-modifying software, use Discord’s built-in settings; choose Nitro if you need Discord’s custom color themes. A third-party mod is a trade-off: it may allow CSS changes beyond the official options, but it conflicts with Discord’s stated restrictions, and the available sources do not quantify the chance of enforcement for theme-only use.

If considering a theme mod despite that risk, treat the mod and each theme as software you are choosing to trust. Review what permissions or external resources it uses and whether it collects data. A theme’s presence in a project repository or compliance with BetterDiscord’s guidelines does not make it Discord-approved.
