Hair serum can smooth split ends and make them look less noticeable, but most serums should not be expected to permanently repair a split hair fiber. A trim removes an existing split; conditioner and gentler styling can help limit further damage. One study found semi-permanent mending with a specific polymer formula, not with serums as a category.
What serum does to a split end
Serum can coat hair, add shine, and make rough or frayed ends appear smoother. That is a cosmetic improvement: the split may be less visible while the product is on the hair, but the damaged section has not necessarily been restored. Do not treat a smoother appearance as proof that the split has disappeared or been permanently fused.
There is a narrow research exception. A PubMed-indexed study tested a particular polyelectrolyte complex made from Polyquaternium-28 and PVM/MA Copolymer. Using stereomicroscopy to assess tagged split ends, the authors reported mending after treatment and combing. The abstract describes the effect as semi-permanent and says the material rinsed away with shampoo. It does not show that ordinary oils, every serum, or every commercial product permanently repairs split fibers. Read the study abstract on PubMed.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
The study abstract states: “Although there are no conventional systems that will permanently mend split ends, a semi-permanent mending composition has been achieved through a polyelectrolyte complex.” That conclusion is specific to the tested formulation and conditions. It supports a distinction between a temporary or semi-permanent binding effect and permanent repair, not a blanket promise for hair serums.

A separate 1995 study examined split-end formation under accelerated brushing and tested treatments on permed hair. Its findings are limited to those conditions; they should not be generalized into a claim that a present-day serum repairs all hair damage. See the 1995 study record on PubMed.
How to assess a serum claim
Look closely at whether the claim describes appearance or structural repair. “Looks smoother” or “visible split ends” is not the same as proving that a split fiber is permanently repaired. In the UK, the Committee of Advertising Practice says marketers of shampoos, conditioners, and serums should generally limit claims to cosmetic effects; repair claims require robust scientific evidence. A product example: Kérastase Nutri-Supplement Split Ends Serum
Kérastase describes this UK leave-in serum as intended to nourish and smooth hair and improve the look of dry and split ends. Its product page says to apply five drops to dry hair and leave them in. The brand also reports “up to 2X fewer visible split ends” in an instrumental test compared with untreated sensitised hair. That is a brand-reported result about visible split ends against a stated comparator—not independent proof of permanent structural repair. See the Kérastase UK product page.

For split ends already present
A trim is the straightforward way to remove the damaged section. Serum may make the ends look more polished, but it does not replace removing the split length if your goal is to get rid of the existing damage.

To reduce further breakage
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using conditioner after shampooing; it coats strands and helps reduce breakage and split ends. A leave-in conditioner or detangler can also help reduce breakage, split ends, and frizz. These are prevention-oriented benefits, not a promise to reunite an already split fiber. - Handle hair gently, especially when combing or detangling.
- Limit damaging heat styling and excessive brushing.
- Use conditioner after shampooing, and consider a leave-in conditioner or detangler if it helps you manage hair with less pulling.
