Use rasterization as your real-time baseline, add ray tracing when a specific effect meaningfully improves the image, and choose path tracing when fuller light transport is worth the extra rendering cost. These methods are not always mutually exclusive: many real-time renderers combine rasterization and ray tracing.
What separates rasterization, ray tracing, and path tracing?
The key difference is how each method determines what light and geometry contribute to the final pixels. In practice, renderers may combine methods rather than rely on just one.
| Method | How it works | Typical strength | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rasterization | Projects scene geometry onto screen pixels; shading and other processing determine their displayed colors. | Efficient rendering for interactive graphics. | Lighting effects may need specialized approximations or additional techniques. |
| Ray tracing | Follows rays through a scene to find intersections and calculate effects such as reflections, refractions, shadows, and indirect lighting. | Improves selected lighting effects where accurate scene interactions matter. | Additional rendering cost; the impact depends on the effect, scene, settings, and hardware. |
| Path tracing | A broader ray-based approach that models more light interactions to estimate light transport. | Can produce more complete, faithful lighting. | Greater computational demand; limited sampling can create image noise and require denoising. |
These are not three interchangeable quality presets. Rasterization is a way to render visible geometry efficiently; ray tracing calculates selected ray-based effects; path tracing uses ray-based sampling to account for a wider range of light transport. NVIDIA’s overview of ray tracing describes these approaches and hybrid rendering.
When should you choose rasterization?
Start with rasterization when interactive performance is the priority and the application’s existing lighting looks good enough for your use. It remains a practical real-time technique, not an obsolete fallback. It can also handle primary visibility in a hybrid renderer while other methods supply selected lighting effects.

Rasterization is a good fit when you need responsive graphics and do not need a particular ray-traced effect to meet your visual goal. Whether its lighting is sufficient is application- and scene-dependent.
When is selective ray tracing or hybrid rendering worthwhile?
Use ray tracing for the effects that benefit from it, such as reflections, shadows, diffuse global illumination, or ambient occlusion. Keep rasterization for work it handles effectively. NVIDIA’s engine-integration guidance recommends this selective approach: the visual benefit of each ray-traced effect should justify its cost.

A hybrid mode can therefore be a better fit than turning every ray-traced option on. Evaluate effects individually: a reflection improvement may matter in one scene, while another effect may bring too little visible benefit for the performance cost.
When should you choose path tracing?
Choose path tracing when fuller light transport and image fidelity matter more than maximizing real-time performance, or when the renderer can spend more time producing each image. It can account for more light interactions than selective ray tracing, but that comes with greater computational demand.

Account for noise and denoising
Path tracing estimates lighting from samples. With low ray counts, the result can be noisy; denoising and reusing lighting information from earlier frames can help. Those techniques affect the rendered result, so assess image stability and reconstruction artifacts as well as lighting quality. NVIDIA discusses these real-time trade-offs in its path-tracing example.

- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads
- Set your performance target. Decide the frame rate you need for interactive use, or the render time you can accept for still images.
- Identify the visual need. Check whether you need more accurate reflections, shadows, indirect lighting, or broader light transport—or whether the rasterized result is already sufficient.
- Test available modes and effects. Compare rasterization, individual ray-traced effects, hybrid modes, and path tracing where available. Keep scene and quality settings consistent.
- Inspect the output. Look for visible lighting improvements, noise, denoising behavior, and reconstruction artifacts, not just a mode name or preset label.
- Check support for your setup. Confirm the application’s software and hardware requirements. A graphics card with hardware acceleration can be relevant to real-time ray-tracing workloads, but the specific requirements depend on the application and workload.
- Choose the least costly mode that meets your goal. If an effect does not improve the result enough to justify its performance cost, leave it off; if complete lighting matters more than speed, path tracing may be appropriate.
The NVIDIA real-time ray-tracing overview discusses GPU acceleration and related technologies. It does not establish that every ray-tracing or path-tracing workload requires a particular vendor or graphics card model, so check the requirements published for the application you plan to use.
