First, verify that your phone has actually stopped receiving Android security patches: check its Android security update date, Google Play system update, and available software updates, then confirm the exact model’s support status with its manufacturer or carrier. If support has ended, keep using any protections and updates still available, but plan to move sensitive accounts and regular use to a phone with active security support. App scans and careful settings help reduce some risks; they do not replace missing operating-system patches.
Check whether your phone is still receiving updates
- Check the update dates and Android version. Open Settings > About phone > Android version (or the equivalent on a tablet) and note the Android version, Android security update date, Google Play system update date, and build number. Menu names vary by manufacturer and Android version. Google explains where to find these statuses in its Android version and update instructions.
- Check for software updates manually. Look under Settings > System > Software updates, or use the update screen provided by your manufacturer. Google says most system updates and security patches install automatically, but you can check manually. An older device may not be able to run a newer Android version.
- Confirm support for the exact device. Check the manufacturer’s official update page for your precise model and market; contact your carrier too if it supplies or manages updates for your phone. Update schedules vary by device, manufacturer, and carrier, so a missing notification or an old patch date by itself does not prove that support has definitively ended.
Do not use the Android version number alone, or the date you bought the phone, to decide whether it is supported. The key question is whether the vendor still provides security updates for that exact model and variant. Support terms can differ by region and carrier, and published schedules can change.
Understand what the update indicators protect
The Android security update date and Google Play system update date refer to different update channels. A recent Google Play system update is useful, but it does not establish that the phone’s manufacturer is still supplying Android security patches. Likewise, Google Play Protect can scan apps without patching vulnerabilities in an operating system that no longer receives updates.
Keep installing official updates that remain available. Treat a phone as unsupported only after checking its official support status—not simply because one update screen has not changed recently.

Reduce exposure while you transition
- Install available official updates. Check the system update screen periodically and apply updates offered for your phone.
- Keep Google Play Protect enabled. Review its scan results. Google says it scans apps from any download source, with daily and on-demand scans available; it protects against some app threats, not missing Android system patches. See Google Play Protect help.
- Review apps and permissions. Uninstall apps you no longer use and restrict permissions an app does not need. CISA recommends using Play Protect and reviewing or restricting app permissions in its Mobile Communications Best Practice Guidance.
- Avoid unknown app sources. Install apps through trusted sources rather than sideloading applications from sites or senders you do not trust.
These steps can reduce some app and account risks, but no setting or app scan can supply security fixes the manufacturer no longer releases. There is no reliable, general percentage for the chance that a particular unsupported Android phone will be compromised; the risk depends on the device, its software, how it is used, and the threats it faces.
If the phone is rooted or modified
Google warns that modified Android versions do not receive automatic security updates from Google and may lose protections. If you continue using a modified phone, move important accounts and sensitive data to a device running unmodified Android. A custom ROM is not a universal fix: availability, device compatibility, installation risks, and ongoing maintenance depend on the exact model.

Decide when to replace the phone
The UK National Cyber Security Centre advises replacing an Android device once it reaches end of life and no longer receives security updates if you want to maintain security standards. Replacement is especially important if you use the phone for sensitive accounts, payments, work, or personal data. If you cannot replace it immediately, use the interim protections above and move sensitive activity to a supported device where possible.
There is no one-size-fits-all date for when every user must stop using an unsupported phone. Your decision should reflect what you do on it and whether the manufacturer still supports it. But hygiene measures are not a substitute for ongoing security patches.

Choose a replacement by its support commitment
Compare the published support terms for the exact model—not just the brand or Android version. A longer commitment can keep a phone useful and protected for longer, but the commitment should match the model, region, and carrier variant you intend to buy.

CISA’s 2024 guidance recommends prioritizing devices with security updates at least monthly and commitments for at least the next five years. That is agency guidance for stronger mobile communications security—not a universal consumer requirement or a guarantee that a particular phone meets it. Google also advises shoppers to look for the Play Protect logo and notes that device availability and specifications vary by region and carrier.
