Those are practical reasons to prefer a cable—not proof that wireless connections universally fail, lag, or drain a phone faster.
1. Wireless Android Auto depends on both the phone and the car
A compatible Android phone is only half the requirement: the car or aftermarket stereo must also support wireless Android Auto. Google’s setup instructions advise checking compatibility, while Google Pixel Help specifies Android 11.0 or higher and 5 GHz Wi-Fi support for wireless projection, subject to regional requirements, including EU rules for in-car 5 GHz operation.
That makes wireless a poor assumption when changing cars, phones, or stereos. Check the exact vehicle and phone requirements with their manufacturers. If the car supports wired Android Auto, a USB connection is a straightforward alternative; the vehicle’s USB port must support data, not just charging.
2. First-time wireless setup asks you to manage more connections
Wireless setup begins with Bluetooth pairing between the phone and car. Google advises keeping Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services enabled while completing setup. That is a modest but real extra set of conditions compared with plugging a phone into a compatible USB data port.

Google also says to set up while parked: “Make sure that your car is in park (P) with the infotainment system turned on, and allow time to set up Android Auto before you start your drive.” Follow its guidance to pay attention to road conditions and obey applicable laws. Android’s developer guidance likewise warns that connecting a phone to car speakers calls for precautions against driver distraction.
3. A cable gives you a practical troubleshooting route
When Android Auto stops working over USB, Google recommends trying a high-quality cable and says replacing the cable will likely fix some cases where a connection used to work but no longer does. Its troubleshooting guidance recommends a cable shorter than 1 metre (3 feet), with no USB hub or extension, for best quality and reliability.

This is a useful fallback, not evidence that wired connections always outperform wireless ones.

These reasons are about compatibility, initial setup, and having a direct wired option when troubleshooting. They do not establish that wireless Android Auto always disconnects, introduces noticeable audio delay, or consumes more battery. Those outcomes can depend on the phone, vehicle, and setup; the official guidance cited here does not quantify a general wired-versus-wireless difference.
