If an Android update will not download or install, first check its status in Settings, connect to reliable Wi-Fi, and charge the device to at least 75%. Then troubleshoot the stage where it stopped: a missing update, stalled download, low storage, installation in progress, or an update waiting for a restart. Menu names and recovery steps vary by manufacturer and carrier.
Check the update status and prepare to retry
- Open Settings and look for System > Software updates. On some phones and tablets, the update option is under About phone or About tablet. Follow the status and instructions shown on your device; labels differ by manufacturer. Google’s Android update instructions describe the general route.
- Connect to Wi-Fi with working internet access and charge the device to at least 75% before starting, as Google recommends. This is a preparation recommendation, not a guarantee that a device below 75% will fail.
- Read the status message before trying again. An update that is unavailable, still downloading, installing, or already downloaded but awaiting a restart needs a different response.
If the update is not offered
A missing update does not necessarily mean something is wrong with the phone. Availability depends on the device, its manufacturer, and sometimes its carrier. Google says Pixel updates can arrive gradually over a few weeks depending on the carrier and device; that is an estimate, not a guaranteed deadline. Check the manufacturer’s or carrier’s schedule for your exact model if Settings says the device is up to date or offers no eligible update.
Support periods are also specific to the device family. For example, Google says Pixel 8 and later phones receive seven years of updates, measured from when each model first became available on the Google Store in the US. That commitment does not apply to Android phones generally. Google notes that older devices cannot always run newer Android versions.
If the download will not start or gets stuck
Check the connection
- Confirm that Wi-Fi has working internet access; try opening a webpage.
- Turn Wi-Fi off and back on, and check that airplane mode is off.
- If possible, test the same Wi-Fi network with another device. This can help distinguish a network problem from one affecting the phone.
- Restart the phone or tablet, then check the update status again.
- If Wi-Fi is still unreliable, check that date and time are set automatically. Google notes that an incorrect date or time can cause Wi-Fi connection problems. See its Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.
Allow time for an automatic retry
If a download began but did not finish, Google says the device will automatically try again over the next few days and send a notification. Open that notification and tap the update action, or return to Settings to check the status. This is not an immediate retry guarantee.

If the device says there is not enough space
Check available storage in Settings > Storage (the exact menu may vary), then remove or move files you no longer need. On Pixel phones, Google’s storage guidance explains how to review storage categories and free space. Avoid deleting unfamiliar system files.
There is no universal free-space threshold for Android system updates established here. Google Play Help’s less-than-1-GB indicator concerns downloading apps, not a general Android system-update requirement.

If the update downloaded but has not taken effect
A completed download may still need an installation step or restart. Pixel phones and Pixel Tablet install downloaded Android updates in the background; the update takes effect after the next restart. Many other Android devices restart automatically while installing. Follow the on-screen prompt, allow an installation visibly in progress to finish, and do not interrupt the device during that process.

Contact the phone manufacturer or carrier if the device becomes unstable or the same specific error keeps returning after the basic checks. Provide the exact model, carrier, and error message so support can give instructions for that device. Google’s general troubleshooting guidance also notes that steps vary by device; its advice for restarting or crashing devices covers safe mode and escalation.

Safe mode can help diagnose whether a downloaded app is contributing to broader device problems, but it is not a universal Android update repair. Treat a factory reset as a last resort and do it only if device-specific support recommends it: Google warns that a reset removes data and advises backing up first. Do not use unofficial firmware-flashing tools, sideload firmware, or unlock the bootloader as routine consumer troubleshooting.
