Dehumidifiers can help reduce condensation and the damp conditions that support mould when indoor humidity is high. They do not fix leaks, remove mould that is already growing or establish that allergy symptoms will improve. Use one as part of a wider moisture-control plan.
How dehumidifiers help with mould
Mould needs moisture to grow, so controlling moisture is central to limiting indoor growth. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) puts it simply: “The key to mold control is moisture control.” A dehumidifier can lower indoor humidity, one potential source of moisture, but it cannot address every cause of dampness.
The EPA advises keeping indoor relative humidity below 60%, ideally between 30% and 50%. A humidity meter, also called a hygrometer, can help you check whether your room is within that range. Dehumidifiers are one option for reducing humidity; ventilation and air conditioning may also help, depending on the circumstances.
If you can see mould, a dehumidifier is not a cleanup device. The EPA recommends correcting the source of water or leaks, cleaning mould from hard surfaces with water and detergent, then drying them fully. Absorbent materials with mould growth may need replacing. Extensive mould or water damage, or damage involving contaminated water, merits professional help.

How they help with condensation
Lowering indoor humidity can reduce condensation, especially when humid air meets cold surfaces such as windows or exterior walls. Ventilation or raising the indoor air temperature can also help. Cold surfaces and insulation may contribute, so a dehumidifier alone may not resolve recurring condensation.
If condensation persists, look beyond the appliance: consider whether moisture is being generated faster than it can be removed, whether ventilation is adequate and whether surfaces are unusually cold. Correct any leaks or other water sources rather than relying on humidity reduction alone.

What to do about damp materials and leaks
Dry damp or wet materials promptly. Where possible, the EPA recommends drying them within 24–48 hours to help prevent mould growth. A dehumidifier may support drying, but it does not replace fixing the leak or removing the water source.
- Find and correct the source of water, including leaks.
- Dry wet materials as soon as possible; aim for the EPA’s 24–48-hour guidance where possible.
- Check indoor relative humidity with a hygrometer and use ventilation, air conditioning or a dehumidifier as appropriate.
- Clean mould from hard surfaces with water and detergent, then dry fully. Consider replacing absorbent mouldy materials.
- Seek professional help for extensive mould or water damage, or contaminated water.
Do dehumidifiers help with allergies?
Mould exposure may cause allergic reactions in sensitive people and can trigger asthma attacks in people with asthma who are allergic to mould. But the guidance cited here does not establish that using a dehumidifier improves allergy symptoms, prevents all reactions or removes airborne mould. It should not be treated as an allergy or asthma treatment.

- Useful: indoor humidity is high and contributing to dampness or condensation; a dehumidifier can be one part of reducing that humidity.
- Not enough: water is still entering through a leak, condensation is driven by cold surfaces or inadequate ventilation, or mould already needs cleanup.
- Not a health treatment: the evidence cited here does not show that operating a dehumidifier treats mould-related allergies or asthma.
The EPA guidance is U.S.-focused; local housing and health advice may differ. Its humidity targets and drying guidance are practical recommendations, not a guarantee that mould will not grow.
