To give microphone permission, allow access for the website in your browser and for the browser or app in your device settings. These are separate controls: enabling one does not necessarily enable the other. Start by choosing Allow when prompted; if you already blocked access, change the saved permission using the instructions for your device below.
Which microphone permission do you need?
Microphone access can be restricted at three points: the website’s permission in your browser, the browser or app’s permission in your operating system, and the selected microphone or its mute state. Check the browser or app and device you are using; the menu paths differ.
- Website permission: lets a particular site use the microphone through the browser.
- Device permission: lets the browser or app access the microphone at all.
- Input and mute: determine whether the intended microphone is available and able to capture sound.
Give microphone permission in Chrome on a computer
- In Chrome, open Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Microphone.
- Choose the default behavior or find the website in the site list. If it is blocked, change its permission to Allow.
- If Chrome asks you to change your computer’s settings, enable microphone access for Chrome in the operating system. Follow any prompt to quit or restart Chrome.
A website permission is specific to that site. Google Chrome Help notes that “If you’re using a different Chrome tab or a different app, a site can’t start recording.” Google Chrome Help: Use your camera and microphone in Chrome.
Allow microphone access in Windows
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
- Turn on Microphone access and Let apps access your microphone.
- If the browser or app appears in the list, turn on its individual access toggle. For desktop programs, also check Let desktop apps access your microphone.
Windows 10
Open Settings > Privacy > Microphone, then check the device and app access controls, including access for the relevant app. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025; these instructions describe its microphone privacy controls, not ongoing support availability. For a website in Microsoft Edge, Windows access is only one layer. Allow the site in Edge as well, either when prompted or through its site permission controls. Microsoft Support: Manage app permissions for your camera in Windows.
Give microphone permission in Firefox
Choose Allow when Firefox asks to use the microphone. If you denied access earlier or no prompt appears, open Firefox’s site permission controls and change the saved Use the microphone permission for that site. Give microphone permission in Safari on a Mac
Allow a website in Safari
Open Safari > Settings > Websites > Microphone. Choose Allow for the site, or adjust the default for other websites. Safari’s site list shows websites with configured permissions. Apple Support: Change Websites settings in Safari on Mac.
Allow Safari or another app in macOS
Open Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone, then turn on access for the relevant app. This app-level setting is separate from Safari’s permission for each website. Apple Support: Control access to the microphone on Mac.

Give microphone permission to an iPhone or iPad app
Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and turn on access for the app. The list includes apps that have requested microphone access, so an app may not appear until it makes a request. Apple Support: Control access to hardware features on iPhone.

If the problem is a website in a mobile browser rather than an app, check that browser’s site permission controls. The iPhone app-permission setting does not establish one universal set of website steps for every iOS browser. Apple Support: Control access to hardware features on iPhone.

- Check operating-system access: Windows separates device, app, and desktop-app controls; macOS has an app-level control. Microsoft Support: Manage app permissions for your camera in Windows and Apple Support: Control access to the microphone on Mac.
- Check the input device: In Chrome’s microphone settings, select the intended microphone. Also check that the operating system recognizes it and that its input level is usable. Google Chrome Help: Use your camera and microphone in Chrome.
- Check whether settings are managed: On a work or school device, an administrator may control browser or device permissions, preventing you from changing them. Google Chrome Help: Use your camera and microphone in Chrome.
Permission allows the browser or app to attempt microphone access; it does not guarantee the selected input, connection, or app audio is working.
