If trackpad gestures stopped working, first check whether the pointer still moves. If pointer movement works but one or more gestures do not, check that gesture’s settings and confirm your device supports it. If the pointer does not move or the trackpad is missing, troubleshoot power, connection, and driver or hardware detection instead. The steps differ across Windows, macOS, ChromeOS, and external Bluetooth trackpads.

First identify what stopped working

Note your operating system and exact computer or trackpad model. Then classify the symptom:

  • One gesture fails: It may be turned off, assigned a different action, or unsupported by the device.
  • All gestures fail, but the pointer moves: Check gesture settings and the trackpad’s capabilities.
  • The pointer does not move, or the trackpad is not detected: Check whether the device is enabled or connected, then investigate software and hardware detection.

For an external Bluetooth trackpad, check its power, pairing, and connection before changing gesture settings. Follow the accessory maker’s instructions for its particular model.

Try the basic checks

Check the surface and enable state

Remove visible dust or dirt from the touchpad surface. On a laptop, check whether a model-specific keyboard shortcut may have disabled the touchpad. The key varies by computer; consult the manufacturer’s manual rather than assuming a universal function-key combination.

Restart the computer

A restart can help when input is temporarily unresponsive. Chromebook users can also try Google’s basic steps: press Esc several times, drum your fingers on the touchpad for ten seconds, and restart. If those do not help, Google lists a factory reset or removing and re-adding the affected account as later steps. These actions can affect local data or account setup, so review Google’s instructions and back up anything important before proceeding. If the basic checks fail, contact the Chromebook manufacturer. Fix gestures on Windows

Check touchpad and gesture settings

  1. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad.
  2. Confirm that the touchpad is enabled.
  3. Expand the Three-finger gestures and Four-finger gestures sections. Check whether the gestures are enabled and assigned to the actions you want.
  4. Test the gesture again. Windows gesture options depend on the touchpad hardware; some require a precision touchpad.

Windows touchpads commonly support two-finger scrolling, pinch-to-zoom, and a two-finger tap or lower-right press for right-click. Three-finger swipes can control windows or apps, while four-finger swipes can switch desktops. The available actions depend on the device. See Microsoft’s Windows touch gesture guidance.

Update or reinstall the touchpad driver

  1. Run Windows Update and install any applicable driver updates.
  2. If needed, open Device Manager and look under Human Interface Devices or Mice and other pointing devices for the touchpad.
  3. Use Device Manager to update the device. If updating does not help, uninstall or reinstall the touchpad device so Windows can retrieve a driver through Windows Update.
  4. If the touchpad or gestures still do not work, contact the computer manufacturer for model-specific support.

Microsoft recommends Windows Update as the preferred driver-update route and documents Device Manager as another option. Update drivers through Device Manager.

Windows 10 note: Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. After that date, it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. Microsoft’s Windows 10 support notice.

Fix gestures on a Mac

Check Trackpad settings

  1. Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings > Trackpad. On older macOS versions, open System Preferences > Trackpad.
  2. Review the available gestures. Turn on a disabled gesture or change its assigned action, then test it.
  3. Use the gesture examples and finger count shown for your Mac. Depending on the macOS version, some Mission Control or App Exposé actions use three fingers instead of four.

Apple’s Trackpad settings show which gestures work with your Mac and let you turn gestures off or change their type. Common examples include two-finger scrolling, pinch-to-zoom, and gestures for Mission Control or App Exposé. Use Multi-Touch gestures on your Mac.

Check the separate three-finger drag option

If three-finger dragging is the gesture that stopped working, check its separate setting under Apple menu > System Settings > Accessibility > Pointer Control > Trackpad Options. The label and path can vary by macOS version. Apple explains this option in Change Pointer Control settings for accessibility on Mac.

If the pointer does not move

Try moving the pointer with one finger; two or more fingers are used for scrolling. If the Mac shows a low-battery alert, connect it to power or use an external keyboard to check. If basic pointer movement still fails after those checks, contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. If your Mac doesn’t respond to trackpad gestures.

When to stop troubleshooting

Contact the computer or accessory maker, or an authorized service provider, if the operating system no longer detects the touchpad, an official driver update or reinstall does not restore it, or basic pointer input remains unavailable after settings and connection checks. A hardware fault is possible, but software symptoms alone do not establish one. Do not open the laptop or install unofficial drivers without a model-specific diagnosis. MSI, for example, notes that a loose cable or failed touchpad module may be possible in its notebook troubleshooting guidance; that is not a diagnosis for every laptop.
