Drying the outside may help, but it cannot guarantee that liquid has not reached or damaged internal components. The right next step depends on the phone model, the liquid, how it was exposed, and whether it still works.
What to do immediately
- Disconnect power. Unplug any cable from the phone and from its power adapter or accessory. Do not reconnect or charge a wet phone; liquid in a connector can corrode the pins and cause permanent damage or stop them working, according to Apple’s liquid-detection guidance.
- Remove excess liquid from the outside. Wipe the exterior with a soft, dry cloth. If the phone has a wet charging connector, keep that end facing down and gently tap the phone against your hand to help remove liquid, as Apple advises for iPhone.
- Let it dry with airflow. Leave the phone in a dry place with air moving around it. Avoid trying to force-dry the device.
- Assess the symptoms. If it continues to malfunction, was exposed to something other than water, or you are unsure whether liquid caused the problem, contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider. Apple directs iPhone owners who are uncertain to Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
What not to do
- Do not charge or connect accessories while the phone is wet. Apple’s general iPhone handling guidance says to wait until the phone is completely dry and allow at least five hours after liquid exposure before charging or connecting an accessory: Important handling information for iPhone.
- Do not put the phone in rice. Apple warns that rice particles can damage an iPhone.
- Do not use external heat or compressed air, or insert objects into the connector. Avoid cotton swabs, paper towels, and other objects in the port as well. Apple specifically warns against heat, compressed air, and foreign objects for iPhone liquid alerts.
These Apple instructions apply to iPhone situations described in its support material; other manufacturers may give model-specific guidance. Check the phone maker’s instructions rather than assuming an iPhone procedure applies to every device.
If an iPhone shows a liquid-detection alert
For a wet iPhone connector, Apple recommends disconnecting the cable, tapping the phone gently with the connector facing down, and leaving it in a dry area with airflow. Wait at least 30 minutes before retrying the connection. If the alert returns, leave the phone to dry longer; complete connector drying can take up to 24 hours. This is guidance for a wet connector, not a promise that internal liquid damage will resolve.
Apple’s connector-specific advice to retry after at least 30 minutes does not override its broader handling guidance to wait until the device is completely dry and allow at least five hours after liquid exposure before charging or connecting accessories. When in doubt, wait longer and follow the guidance for your exact model.

When drying is not enough
Drying the exterior or connector does not confirm that the inside of the phone is undamaged. Seek a repair assessment if the phone has persistent problems after exposure, if the liquid was not water, or if you cannot tell whether liquid is responsible. For iPhone, Apple recommends contacting Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider when unsure about liquid damage.
Water in an iPhone port can temporarily reduce speaker or microphone performance until it evaporates, according to Apple’s guidance on iPhone splash, water, and dust resistance. Persistent or broader faults should not be treated as ordinary connector drying; have the device assessed.

Water resistance and warranty are not guarantees
Water resistance varies by model and is not permanent. Apple says supported iPhone models were tested under controlled laboratory conditions with model-dependent IP67 or IP68 ratings, and that resistance can diminish with normal wear. Those ratings should not be generalized to every phone or treated as a promise that a device will survive every liquid exposure.
Apple states that liquid damage to iPhone or iPod is not covered by its One-Year Limited Warranty, while noting that applicable consumer-law rights may apply. Many models have liquid contact indicators; consult the indicator information for the specific model rather than concluding that a symptom alone proves liquid damage.
