Choose a U.S.-listed crypto exchange-traded product by comparing what it actually holds, how it seeks returns, its full costs, how shares are valued and traded, and the custody and operational risks behind it. “Crypto ETF” is not one uniform structure: some products hold spot crypto in a trust, while others use futures or other derivatives. Start by deciding whether crypto exposure fits your portfolio at all; then use each product’s current prospectus and filings to compare candidates.

Know what “cryptocurrency ETF” means

This guide covers U.S.-listed crypto exchange-traded products (ETPs). Some spot crypto products are structured as trusts and are not registered investment companies under the Investment Company Act of 1940, so do not assume every product called an ETF has the same legal structure. The SEC Division of Corporation Finance’s July 1, 2025 statement describes crypto ETPs as exchange-listed products that typically hold spot crypto assets or derivatives referencing crypto assets. The statement reflects staff views on disclosure; it is not a Commission rule or guidance. SEC staff statement on crypto ETPs.

Listing approval is not a government endorsement of the asset or a custody arrangement. In January 2024, then-SEC Chair Gary Gensler said, “While we approved the listing and trading of certain spot bitcoin ETP shares today, we did not approve or endorse bitcoin.” He also cautioned investors about risks associated with bitcoin and products tied to crypto. Compare the product’s exposure and objective

Identify the asset and how the product gets exposure

Read the investment objective and principal strategy in the prospectus. Determine whether the product holds crypto directly, uses futures, obtains exposure through swaps or other derivatives, or holds shares of another ETP. Also identify whether it tracks one asset or a basket. These structures are not interchangeable: a futures fund does not give you the same exposure as a trust holding spot crypto.

For example, ProShares Bitcoin & Ether Equal Weight ETF (BETE) described in its September 26, 2025 summary prospectus an equal-weight bitcoin-and-ether basket accessed primarily through futures. It does not invest directly in bitcoin or ether; it resets exposure monthly and rolls futures before expiration. This is a dated illustration of how a product can seek crypto exposure without holding the coins directly, not a current recommendation. BETE summary prospectus, September 26, 2025.

Check the benchmark and pricing method

Find the return the product seeks, the benchmark or index it uses, how that index is calculated, and how the fund determines net asset value (NAV). Look for the pricing sources and trading platforms used by an index, how the benchmark is overseen, whether the sponsor can change it, and how investors would be notified. SEC staff identifies these as disclosure topics investors may need to understand. A product’s stated objective and benchmark tell you what it is trying to do; neither guarantees that its results will match the objective.

For a spot product, also check how many units of the underlying asset each share represents and whether that amount can decline as the trust sells assets to pay fees and expenses. Review the trust’s policies for forks, airdrops, staking, and other incidental rights; these policies can differ among products.

Work out the costs you will actually bear

Start with the latest prospectus fee table, not an old comparison chart. Note the management or sponsor fee, other operating expenses, and any waiver’s amount, conditions, and expiration date. Then account for brokerage commissions and other intermediary charges that may apply to your account. For a futures strategy, review financing and transaction costs as well: rolling derivatives is part of how the strategy operates, and these costs may not appear in the annual operating expense figure.

BETE’s September 2025 summary prospectus listed 0.95% total annual operating expenses after a contractual waiver described as running through September 30, 2026. The filing also said transaction and financing costs were not reflected in the fee table or expense example. That waiver date has passed, so the historical figure should not be treated as BETE’s current fee; check the latest filing for the current terms. BETE summary prospectus.

Assess liquidity, valuation, and tracking

Review how NAV is calculated, whether shares may trade above or below NAV, and the product’s disclosures about liquidity. Compare the product’s performance with its stated objective over an appropriate period, while recognizing that newer products may have limited histories and past results do not establish future performance. SEC staff flags valuation and liquidity as potential material risks.

Products with similar names or exposures can still perform differently. A ProShares filing discusses how fees, index providers, service providers, and market-maker or authorized-participant conditions may contribute to differences among spot products. ProShares Trust II prospectus filed February 2026. Check the specific product’s trading and valuation disclosures rather than assuming that two funds tracking the same asset will behave identically.

Check custody and operational dependencies

For a spot trust, identify the sponsor and crypto custodian, how the assets are held and managed, and what any insurance does—and does not—cover. Also examine reliance on prime brokers, index providers, authorized participants, and other service providers. A prospectus should help you understand the arrangements and relevant risks, including cybersecurity, technological and operational failures, legal or regulatory developments, and policies for forks and airdrops. Match the structure to your portfolio role

Decide first whether you want crypto exposure and how much volatility and concentration your portfolio can tolerate. A single-asset spot product concentrates exposure in that asset. A basket changes which assets and proportions you hold, but does not remove crypto-market risk. A futures product adds derivatives exposure, rolling mechanics, and potentially different tracking behavior; it is not a substitute for direct spot exposure.

Review the prospectus risk disclosures for the particular product. SEC staff points to risks that can include price volatility, manipulation and operational problems at crypto trading venues, network attacks, concentration, and dependence on service providers. The SEC Chair’s 2024 approval statement likewise cautioned about risks tied to bitcoin and related products, and made clear that approval of certain listings was not an endorsement. Build a shortlist with a side-by-side comparison

For each candidate, use its latest prospectus, annual and periodic filings, exchange information, and your brokerage’s information. Fill in the same fields for every product so differences are visible:

What to compare Questions to answer
Exposure Spot holdings, futures, swaps, or fund-of-funds structure? Which coin or basket?
Objective and benchmark What return does it seek? How is the index calculated, priced, and rebalanced? How does the product measure tracking?
Costs What is the current fee? Is a waiver in force, and when does it end? What other operating, trading, financing, or brokerage costs may apply?
Liquidity and valuation Where does it trade? What do current trading volume and spreads show? How is NAV determined, and can shares trade at a premium or discount?
Operations and custody Who are the sponsor, custodian, prime broker, and other key providers? What are the insurance limits and asset-management policies?
Portfolio fit and risks How concentrated is the exposure? Are there derivatives, counterparty, regulatory, or tax risks relevant to your account and intended role?

Availability and features can vary by product and brokerage. On July 29, 2025, the SEC announced approval orders permitting authorized participants to make in-kind creations and redemptions for crypto ETP shares, alongside orders concerning mixed spot bitcoin-and-ether ETPs and options. That dated regulatory development does not establish that every product now offers a given feature; verify the current fund documents and exchange listing.
