Use a Claude Project for a continuing workstream: add shared reference material to its project knowledge, then save recurring rules with Set project instructions. Those instructions apply to every chat in that Project, but one chat’s conversation is not automatically available in another. Projects are currently available on paid Claude plans, according to Anthropic’s Projects documentation.
When a Claude Project is useful
A Project is a good fit when separate tasks draw on the same durable context: for example, a research project with recurring source documents, a software project with shared code and conventions, or a communications workstream with consistent terminology and output requirements. Use separate chats for distinct tasks while keeping their shared reference material and instructions in the Project.
A Project is not a shared memory of every conversation inside it. If a fact or decision from one chat needs to inform later chats, add it to project knowledge rather than assuming Claude will carry it over.
Create a Project
- Open Projects in Claude and select + New Project.
- Enter a recognizable name and description. These fields help you organize the interface; Claude does not receive them as context. Put essential background or rules in project knowledge or Project instructions instead.
- Open the new Project to add reference material and set its instructions before starting task-specific chats.
Anthropic’s project setup guide describes Projects as available to users on paid Claude plans. Plan eligibility can change, so check the current product page if Projects are not available in your account.

Add material that should inform multiple chats
In the Project, add documents, text, or code to its knowledge area. This is the reusable source base for chats in that Project. Keep the material focused and current: a short, authoritative policy or current specification is generally more useful than a large collection of conflicting drafts.
Anthropic’s file guidance lists PDF, DOCX, CSV, TXT, HTML, ODT, RTF, EPUB, JSON, and XLSX when the analysis tool is enabled. It states a 30 MB limit per project-knowledge file; the total content also needs to fit within Claude’s context window, with further token limits based on extracted text.
PDF handling depends on model and length. Anthropic says Claude 4 models, Claude 3.7 Sonnet, and Claude 3.5 Sonnet can analyze text and visual elements in PDFs under 100 pages uploaded to chats or Projects. For longer PDFs or other listed models, processing is text-only. Consult the current upload support page if a file fails or visual details matter.

Save repeatable behavior in Project instructions
- Open the Project and choose Set project instructions.
- Write the recurring guidance Claude should follow for work in this Project.
- Save the instructions, then start chats for individual tasks in the Project.
Anthropic states: “Claude will use these instructions for all the chats within the project.” Use this field for durable, project-specific direction, such as:
- Task and audience: what the work is for and who will use the result.
- Source rules: which materials to prioritize and how to handle conflicts or unsupported claims.
- Terminology: preferred names, definitions, and terms to avoid.
- Output requirements: structure, tone, format, and level of detail.
- Constraints: recurring limits, compliance rules, or checks to perform.
Make instructions specific enough to check. For example: “Use the terminology in the product glossary; flag conflicts with the current policy; return a summary followed by open questions.” This is practical guidance, not a guarantee that Claude will follow every instruction perfectly.
Keep project knowledge separate from chat history
Project knowledge is the place for information intended to carry across chats. Chat history is conversation-specific: do not count on a new chat knowing decisions, explanations, or attachments from an earlier one unless the relevant information is present in project knowledge. When a chat produces a useful decision, add a concise, verified record to the Project’s knowledge so later work can use it.

As project knowledge approaches context limits, Anthropic says retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) can turn on automatically. Rather than loading all project material at once, it retrieves relevant information from uploaded documents. Anthropic says this can expand project capacity “by up to 10x”; that is the vendor’s product claim, not an independent benchmark or assurance that every relevant detail will be retrieved. If Claude displays a RAG indicator, it signals that retrieval is active. See Anthropic’s RAG explanation.
Choose the right scope for personalization
Claude offers different places for different kinds of guidance. Anthropic distinguishes profile preferences, Project instructions, and Styles in its personalization guide.
| Option | Scope and purpose | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Profile preferences | Apply across conversations | General defaults you want Claude to use broadly |
| Project instructions | Apply to chats in one Project | Recurring task context, rules, terminology, and constraints for a workstream |
| Styles | Shape tone and response format | How you want an answer to read or be presented |
Use Project instructions for rules tied to the workstream, profile preferences for broad defaults, and a Style when the main need is presentation.

Share a Project with teammates when appropriate
Team and Enterprise documentation describes private Projects and options to share with selected members or an organization, with Can use and Can edit permissions. Whether organization-wide sharing is available depends on administrator settings. Anthropic also notes that sharing a Project’s knowledge base does not automatically share the creator’s chats; chats must be shared separately. Review the current Projects guide and sharing instructions for controls available to your account.
Use Projects without assuming a fixed message allowance
Project instructions and knowledge help keep recurring work organized, but they do not establish a guaranteed message quota. Anthropic says usage varies by plan and is affected by message length, attachments, conversation length, tools, model choice, and artifact use. It also describes caching for reused project content; do not assume a particular number of extra messages or a specific quota saving. See Anthropic’s usage guidance.
