Apple Handoff lets you continue an open task—such as a webpage, email, or document—on a nearby Apple device. Turn Handoff on for both devices, use the same Apple Account, and open the Handoff prompt on the device where you want to continue. Handoff continues supported app activities; it does not transfer arbitrary files.
Before you start
- Sign in to both devices with the same Apple Account.
- Turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on both devices. Apple’s checklist does not require that they be connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Make sure Handoff is enabled on both devices and that the app supports Handoff and is installed on the receiving device.
- Keep the source device nearby, unlocked, and displaying the task you want to continue. If you use a VPN, its configuration must allow local networking.
- Confirm both devices meet Apple’s current system requirements; Apple’s requirements may change, and the guidance does not specify model or OS cutoffs here. See Apple’s Handoff requirements and setup guidance.
Handoff is on by default according to Apple’s setup overview, but check the setting on both devices if it is not working. The controls can be named slightly differently depending on the operating-system version.
Turn on Handoff
On iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then AirPlay & Continuity. On some versions, the menu is labeled AirPlay & Handoff.
- Turn on Handoff.
On Mac
- On macOS Ventura 13 or later, open System Settings > General > AirDrop & Continuity (or AirDrop & Handoff).
- Turn on Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices.
On earlier macOS versions, open System Preferences > General and enable Handoff there.
On Apple Watch
- Open the Apple Watch app on the paired iPhone.
- Tap My Watch > General.
- Turn on Enable Handoff.
Continue a task on another device
- On the source device, open the supported app and bring the activity you want to continue to the front. Leave it open.
- Keep the source device unlocked and near the receiving device.
- On the receiving device, select the Handoff icon or banner. Its location depends on the device:
- Mac: Click the app’s Handoff icon in the Dock, or select the app with Command-Tab.
- iPad: Tap the Handoff icon at the right end of the Dock.
- iPhone: Open the App Switcher and tap the app banner.
On Mac, the icon appears toward the right end of the Dock at the bottom of the screen. If the Dock is positioned on the left or right, the icon appears at the bottom of the Dock. The Handoff control appears when an activity is available to continue.

Which apps work with Handoff?
The app must support Handoff, and it must be installed on the receiving device. Apple lists Calendar, Clock, Contacts, FaceTime, Freeform, Keynote, Mail, Maps, News, Notes, Numbers, Pages, Reminders, Safari, and Stocks as examples, along with third-party apps. This is not a complete compatibility list; availability depends on the app.
Handoff, Universal Clipboard, or AirDrop?

If Handoff does not appear
- Check that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are on for both devices and that both are signed in to the same Apple Account.
- Verify Handoff is enabled on both devices using the settings paths above.
- Confirm that the app supports Handoff and is installed on the receiving device.
- Return to the source device, bring the task to the front, and keep the device unlocked and nearby.
- If a VPN is active, check that it does not block local networking.
