For eligible Spotify plans in the United States, the plan holder gets 15 hours of audiobook listening time per billing month. The allowance is based on each book’s normal-speed running time—not the time you spend listening—and unused hours expire at the end of the billing period. When you run out, you can check account-specific options such as Audiobooks+, a one-time top-up, or separately unlocking a title.

Who gets Spotify audiobook hours?

Spotify’s US subscriber-catalog guidance, checked October 7, 2026, specifies 15 hours per month for eligible plans. The hours are tied to the plan and account, not automatically shared across everyone on a subscription.

  • Premium Individual: The subscriber receives the monthly allowance.
  • Premium Family and Premium Duo: The plan manager receives it. Other members do not automatically get the manager’s hours; the manager can arrange extra time for members through supported Audiobooks+ for Plan Members or top-ups.
  • Premium Student: Spotify’s US guidance does not include audiobook hours with this plan.

Spotify also lists a separate US-only Audiobooks Access option with 15 monthly hours from the subscriber catalog, ad-supported music and podcasts, but not other Premium features. It is a distinct option, so check the current account page for availability and terms.

How Spotify counts listening time

Spotify deducts the audiobook’s normal-speed duration. For example, a five-hour audiobook uses five hours of allowance even if you listen at 2x speed and finish it in 2.5 hours of real time. Listening to a book or section again uses time again.

A title you separately unlock for paid access does not use the included monthly hours. Spotify describes an unlocked title as available to listen to on Spotify, not as a transfer of ownership.

When do hours reset, and do unused hours carry over?

Included hours renew with the account’s billing period. Unused included time expires at that boundary and does not roll into the next month. Any Audiobooks+ hours also reset monthly, while one-time top-ups follow a different validity period described below.

Spotify’s audiobook listening-time support page provides an account view for remaining time and renewal details. Usage tracking can lag after pausing mid-chapter or being offline for an extended period, so the display may not immediately reflect recent listening.

What can you do when the monthly hours run out?

Spotify’s US help pages do not specify one universal price for add-ons or top-ups. Check the options and price shown in your account before buying; availability and terms can vary.

Option How it works Who receives or uses it
Audiobooks+ Recurring add-on billed with Premium; hours are used after included plan hours and reset monthly. Check the account’s Add-ons area for available options. For Family or Duo member hours, the manager must arrange the supported plan-member add-on.
One-time top-up Used after included plan and add-on hours. Spotify’s US purchase guidance says it remains valid for 12 months from purchase. For Family and Duo, the manager buys or assigns extra hours; a member can request them.
Separately unlocked audiobook A paid title is listened to on Spotify without drawing on included plan hours. Useful when access to a particular book matters more than using the monthly allowance.

How to check your remaining time and choose an option

  1. Open Spotify’s account and audiobook listening-time view to check your remaining hours, next renewal, and any top-up expiry.
  2. If you want more recurring monthly listening, open the account’s Add-ons area and review Audiobooks+. Confirm the account-specific price and terms before subscribing.
  3. If you need extra time only occasionally, review the one-time top-up option. It is consumed after monthly plan and add-on hours; eligibility and expiry are shown in Spotify’s terms.
  4. If you want one specific book, check whether it is marked Included in Premium or offered for separate unlock. Included-catalog titles can change and vary by country.
  5. If you are a Family or Duo member rather than the manager, ask the manager to arrange extra hours. Access to assigned add-ons or top-ups can end if you leave the plan.

Spotify’s US top-up guidance says a top-up may be usable again if you resume an eligible subscription within 12 months after canceling Premium, but the original expiry date still applies. Check the current account terms before relying on a balance after cancellation or a plan change.

Which Spotify audiobook titles use the allowance?

Included hours apply to the subscriber catalog, not every audiobook listed on Spotify. Look for the Included in Premium label in the app. Catalog availability changes over time and differs by market; a book that can be separately unlocked may not be included in the plan catalog.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
