How do the two options remove moisture?
Electric dehumidifier
A conventional portable dehumidifier draws air across a refrigerated evaporator. Water condenses on the cold surface and is collected in a bucket or routed away through a drain. The fan, refrigeration system, and condensate collection make it an active appliance intended to treat room air. ENERGY STAR explains how dehumidifiers work and how they are rated.
Capacity is expressed as pints of water removed per 24 hours under specified test conditions; efficiency is measured by integrated energy factor (IEF), or liters removed per kilowatt-hour. These ratings help compare appliances, but they do not mean a unit will remove that amount in every home or operating condition.
Passive calcium-chloride absorber
A passive absorber uses hygroscopic crystals that take up moisture and gradually dissolve into liquid brine. It requires no electricity or fan. Once its crystals are spent, the product must be replaced or refilled. This is not the same as an electric desiccant-wheel dehumidifier. A tub or hanging bag of crystals is a passive consumer product, not a powered appliance designed to circulate and treat room air.
Which works better for your space?

A passive absorber can help in a small storage space, but the available product information does not establish that one can control a substantial basement moisture load. Conversely, “electric” alone does not guarantee success: capacity, temperature, air exchange, drainage, and the source of moisture all affect results.

What size dehumidifier should you choose?
Use the ENERGY STAR consumer chart as a starting point for portable units. Its recommendations combine area and dampness; the figures below apply to spaces under 2,000 square feet and are capacity ranges, not promises of actual daily collection in a particular home.

See ENERGY STAR’s current dehumidifier guidance for the chart and further selection advice. If replacing an older unit, how much water it collected in a typical day may help indicate the demand. For a larger or whole-home problem, distinguish portable equipment from ducted whole-home systems rather than assuming a room-sized appliance covers the entire house.

Will a dehumidifier work in a cold basement?
Temperature matters. ENERGY STAR cautions that conventional dehumidifier coils may frost and moisture removal may suffer when temperatures fall below about 65°F. In a cold basement, check that the model is specified for lower-temperature use and look for anti-frost protection, such as a sensor. A passive absorber’s reviewed product materials do not establish a comparable low-temperature performance range.
What humidity level should you aim for?
ENERGY STAR gives 30%–50% relative humidity as the general optimum indoor range. If your appliance does not display RH, use a separate hygrometer to check the room rather than relying on whether the air feels damp. Some dehumidifiers include a humidistat that can regulate operation toward a setpoint.

What upkeep and energy use should you expect?
- Electric unit: It consumes electricity and needs its collected water emptied, unless a suitable hose drain is used. ENERGY STAR says certified dehumidifiers remove the same amount of moisture as similarly sized conventional units while using 20% less energy; that comparison is between dehumidifiers, not against passive absorbers. Compare certified models using IEF and current ENERGY STAR criteria. Version 6.0 criteria took effect October 1, 2025; see the program’s product guidance and criteria.
- Passive absorber: It uses no electricity, but its crystals are a consumable. Replace or refill the product when they are spent, following the product’s instructions.
Address the moisture source, not only the symptoms
Dehumidification can reduce indoor moisture, but persistent dampness may have an underlying source. ENERGY STAR recommends reducing moisture sources such as foundation drainage problems, unvented clothes drying, and humidity from bathrooms or kitchens. Venting moisture-producing activities and correcting water entry can reduce the load on an appliance and may be necessary for lasting improvement.
There is no independently established, matched-room removal-rate comparison between a passive calcium-chloride absorber and an electric dehumidifier in the cited sources. The practical decision is therefore about scale and control: use a properly sized active unit for sustained room-scale humidity, and reserve passive absorbers for localized spaces where their limited, consumable operation fits the need.
