Choose a controller for the exact device you want to control, then confirm that the connection method and the games you play support it. A controller that connects by Bluetooth or USB is not automatically compatible with every console or game. For PC use in particular, check support for your specific game and launcher before buying.
Start with the device you want to control
First identify the target: Nintendo Switch or Switch 2, Switch Lite, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, or a Windows PC. Then check the exact controller model’s documentation for that platform and generation. Support for PC or mobile does not by itself mean a controller works with a console.
Use the platform maker’s instructions for pairing rather than assuming that steps for one controller apply to another. Nintendo provides a controller-pairing FAQ and Pro Controller instructions.
Choose a controller for your platform
Nintendo Switch and Switch 2
Nintendo documents its Switch Pro Controller for pairing and wired communication. The support page also says that up to eight wireless controllers can be used with Nintendo Switch or Switch 2; this is a platform capacity statement, not a performance rating.

- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
Switch Lite has an extra consideration for wired play: Nintendo says a licensed accessory is required to use a Pro Controller wired, and gives HORI’s Dual USB PlayStand as an example. Check the stand’s current availability and compatibility details before purchasing. For pairing and wired-use instructions, see Nintendo’s Pro Controller support page.
PS5 and PC
Sony’s DualSense Wireless Controller is the platform-specific option to consider for PS5. Sony also documents connecting DualSense to a PC, but notes that controller support can vary by game. Check the requirements for the particular PC games you plan to play in Sony’s PC gaming guidance rather than assuming every game supports the controller.

Xbox and Windows PC
For Xbox, look for a controller documented for the specific Xbox generation you own. If you need an accessibility-focused option, Microsoft lists its Xbox Adaptive Controller for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows PC. It supports Xbox Wireless, Bluetooth, and USB; see Microsoft’s Xbox Adaptive Controller page.
Check how the connection will work
After confirming platform support, check whether you will connect by USB, Bluetooth, or the platform’s wireless connection. Confirm that the console or PC supports that method and whether your setup needs a particular cable, adapter, or licensed accessory.

- Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.
- Wired play: Check the device’s available ports, cable reach, and any platform-specific accessory requirement. The Switch Lite wired-use requirement is one documented example.
- Wireless play: Follow the pairing instructions for the exact controller model and target device; do not assume that Bluetooth pairing guarantees console support.
- Adapters: Compatibility and retained features can vary by adapter model, controller, firmware, and platform. Do not rely on a generic claim that an adapter makes one console’s controller work on another; verify the exact combination in current manufacturer documentation.
Verify game support and features
On PC, a controller may connect successfully while a particular game or launcher does not support it fully. Microsoft’s Windows controller guidance lists DualShock 4, DualSense, and Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers among controller options. It also says some PlayStation controller and game combinations may need Steam Input or DS4Windows for full compatibility. Treat this as setup guidance, not a guarantee for every title.
Check the game’s own controller requirements and the relevant platform guidance for features you care about. Support for a controller does not establish that its headset jack, haptics, adaptive triggers, motion controls, or remapping work identically across platforms.

Match the physical and accessibility setup
Consider whether you play handheld or docked, which ports are available, how far the controller will be from the device, and whether a stand or other accessory is needed. Comfort, battery life, latency, and durability are also useful criteria when comparing models, but they require model-specific evidence or testing; connection compatibility alone does not establish how a controller performs on them.
If a standard controller layout does not meet your needs, consider an adaptive option rather than assuming one shape or input method suits everyone. Microsoft documents the Xbox Adaptive Controller for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows PC, with Xbox Wireless, Bluetooth, and USB connections.
