Anthropic’s guidance notes differences in response length, instruction following, tool use, reasoning depth, and formatting. To troubleshoot, confirm the exact model, check its lifecycle and supported settings, make the prompt’s requirements explicit, and compare results with the same inputs and context.
Why can a cheaper Claude model give a different answer?
Model price alone does not explain an output difference. Anthropic provides model-specific prompting guidance because models can behave differently: one may be more concise, interpret instructions differently, use tools differently, or format its response another way. A prompt tuned for one model may need adjustments for another. Anthropic recommends checking model-specific techniques against your own evaluations rather than assuming they transfer unchanged (Prompting best practices).
Other variables can also affect what you see: the selected model identifier, its lifecycle status, the conversation context, and request settings. There is no general percentage that describes how much a cheaper Claude model differs in quality from a more expensive one; the cited Anthropic guidance is qualitative, not a price-versus-performance benchmark.
How to troubleshoot different Claude results
-
Confirm which model is actually selected
Record the exact model identifier and relevant request configuration before comparing outputs. In Claude Code, the
--modeloption accepts an alias such assonnet, opus, orhaiku, or a full model name. It overrides the configured model andANTHROPIC_MODELfor that session. See the Claude Code CLI reference.PC Slower Than It Used to Be?

Check whether the model is active and whether migration is needed
Consult Anthropic’s model deprecations page for the exact model’s current status and migration guidance. Deprecated models may be less reliable than active ones. For example, Anthropic’s June 5, 2026 notice listed Claude Opus 4.1 as retired on August 5, 2026, with Claude Opus 4.8 as its replacement. That is a dated lifecycle example, not a substitute for checking the model you use.
-
Check that request settings are supported
A configuration problem can cause a failed request rather than a merely different answer. Anthropic’s deprecations documentation says
temperature,top_p, andtop_kare deprecated for Claude Opus 4.7 and later; a non-default value for any of them returns a 400 error on those models. The page recommends omitting them and using prompting to guide behavior. Check the current documentation for your exact model before changing parameters. -
Make the prompt’s requirements concrete
State the task, relevant context, constraints, and required output format directly. If a model leaves out detail, specify what information it must include; if its formatting is unsuitable, describe the format you need. Anthropic says, “Claude responds well to clear, explicit instructions. Being specific about your desired output can help enhance performance.” Test prompt changes on representative examples using the target model (Anthropic prompting best practices).
-
Compare models under controlled conditions
Use the same prompt, conversation context, tools, and settings supported by each model. Change one element at a time, then evaluate correctness, completeness, instruction following, formatting, and tool use against your task. Measure latency and cost in your own workload. This is a practical evaluation approach, not a performance guarantee or a published comparative test.

Inspect Claude Code execution when relevant
Run Claude Code with
--verbosewhen turn-by-turn output can help diagnose what happened. Anthropic describes verbose output as useful for debugging in print and interactive modes. See the CLI reference.
What to compare when choosing between available models
Compare candidates on the work you actually need them to do, rather than treating price as a proxy for behavior. Useful criteria include:
Rank #4
- Correctness and completeness of the output.
- How reliably the model follows instructions and produces the requested format.
- Tool use, if the task depends on tools.
- Effort or thinking-depth controls supported by that model.
- Latency and cost measured on your own workload.
- Current availability and lifecycle status.
Anthropic’s documentation supports the existence of model-specific behavioral differences and lifecycle changes, but it does not provide a current comparative price/performance table for every model. Model names, availability, supported parameters, and migration advice can change; check the current official documentation for the exact model and identifier.
