Choose a dehumidifier by matching the room’s floor area with how damp it is before treatment—not by room size alone. ENERGY STAR’s current consumer guide recommends 20–30 pints per day for a slightly to moderately damp space under 2,000 square feet, 25–40 pints for a very damp space, and 30–50 pints for a wet space. For larger areas, its recommendations start at 30, 40, and 50 pints per day, respectively.

Find the capacity range for your room

First estimate the area the dehumidifier will serve, then describe the moisture conditions before you start using it. ENERGY STAR’s chart uses “small-medium” to mean under 2,000 square feet and gives these recommendations:

Conditions before dehumidification Under 2,000 sq. ft. Over 2,000 sq. ft.
Slightly to moderately damp: intermittent musty odor; 50–75% relative humidity 20–30 pints/day 30+ pints/day
Very damp: consistently damp smell or visible damp spots; 75–90% relative humidity 25–40 pints/day 40+ pints/day
Wet: walls or floor sweat, seepage, or a high moisture load such as laundry drying; 90–100% relative humidity 30–50 pints/day 50+ pints/day

These are ENERGY STAR recommendations, not guarantees that a particular unit will hold every room at a chosen humidity. The guide’s larger-area categories are stated as over 2,000 square feet; it does not specify a separate recommendation for exactly 2,000 square feet. For an area near that boundary, use the conditions and the manufacturer’s guidance for the specific model.

Use dampness as well as square footage

A mildly musty room and a room with sweating surfaces or seepage have different moisture loads, even if they are the same size. Use the row that best matches the room’s condition before treatment. If conditions vary—for example, because laundry is regularly dried there—account for that added moisture rather than sizing only by floor area.

When replacing an existing unit

If the old dehumidifier is still operating, the amount of water you empty from it each day can help you judge the capacity needed for a replacement. ENERGY STAR advises choosing larger rather than smaller when in doubt: “Remember, it’s better to oversize than undersize!”

What “pints per day” means

A capacity rating in pints per day is the amount of water a dehumidifier removes in 24 hours under specified test conditions. It is a way to compare moisture-removal capacity, not a promise about how much water it will collect in your room every day. Actual results depend on the conditions in the space and the rating basis used for the product.

That test basis matters when comparing older and newer models. The U.S. Department of Energy changed its dehumidifier test procedure beginning in early 2020 to use cooler, more realistic conditions comparable to a basement. Cooler air contains less moisture to remove, so many products received lower displayed capacity ratings than under the earlier procedure. A lower number on a newer label does not by itself prove that the unit performs worse in real use; the size of the rating change varies by model. Check the manufacturer’s comparison information when available.

For details on the test change and capacity ratings, see ENERGY STAR’s explanation of dehumidifier testing and capacity.

Compare efficiency after choosing a suitable capacity

Once a unit meets the capacity range for the room, compare its Integrated Energy Factor (IEF). IEF measures liters of water removed per kilowatt-hour and accounts for energy used during operation as well as standby or off periods. ENERGY STAR’s Version 6.0 dehumidifier criteria took effect October 1, 2025; check the current criteria when comparing certification and efficiency claims.

ENERGY STAR says certified dehumidifiers use 20% less energy than similarly sized conventional units. That comparison is ENERGY STAR’s stated claim, not a guarantee of a particular household’s bill savings. See ENERGY STAR’s key efficiency criteria and its dehumidifier buying guidance.

Check how the unit collects and drains water

Capacity is only one part of whether a room unit will be convenient to use. ENERGY STAR describes the common arrangement as a collection bucket with an automatic shutoff when it is full. Its buying guidance also says certified models include a humidistat. Before choosing a model, check its specifications for the features you need:

  • Humidistat: lets the unit monitor humidity and control operation toward a selected setting.
  • Bucket size and shutoff: a full-bucket shutoff can stop operation before water overflows, but a smaller bucket may need frequent emptying.
  • Continuous drainage: check whether the model supports a hose and whether the intended drain is positioned appropriately; this can reduce manual emptying.

Know when a room unit is the wrong category

A portable dehumidifier is intended for a single room or space. A whole-home dehumidifier is a different type of system: it uses ducting to serve one or more rooms and is usually installed permanently.

ENERGY STAR says a whole-home system may suit a humid-climate home with central air when humidity remains above 55% throughout a relatively well-sealed home. Proper sizing and professional installation matter. Treat that as a separate home-system decision, not as an extension of the portable room-size chart.

A practical comparison checklist

When comparing candidate units, check these items together rather than selecting by the largest pint-per-day number alone:

  • Does the rated capacity meet the range for the room’s area and dampness?
  • Are the models’ capacity ratings based on comparable test procedures, particularly if one is older?
  • What is each model’s IEF, and is it ENERGY STAR certified?
  • How does it collect water, and does it support the drainage arrangement you need?
  • Is the space suited to a portable room unit, or does it call for a ducted whole-home system?
