Read BHEL’s income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statement together, then treat its order book as a pipeline of contracts—not revenue already earned. The first step is to check each document’s reporting period, audit status and tax basis so that the figures you compare actually line up.

Start by checking which report and period you are reading

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) publishes annual reports, audited results, unaudited quarterly results and investor presentations in its investor relations library. Before comparing numbers, note whether a document is annual or quarterly, standalone or consolidated, audited or unaudited, and the date of the balance sheet. Use the same reporting basis for each period.

This distinction matters for the latest year. BHEL’s 17 April 2026 release described FY 2025–26 turnover of approximately ₹32,350 crore as provisional and unaudited. The company later listed its FY26 annual report on 10 July 2026 and FY26 audited results on 4 May 2026. Use those audited materials for final FY26 analysis, rather than treating the April release as an audited result. The release also reported approximate order inflows of ₹75,000 crore and an outstanding order book of about ₹2.4 lakh crore at FY-end; check the audited documents for final figures and definitions. Income statement: did revenue growth reach profit?

Start with revenue, then follow material and employee costs and other operating expenses to operating performance. Continue through finance costs and tax to profit after tax (PAT). Compare margins as well as rupee totals: revenue can rise without a corresponding improvement in operating performance or final profit.

For context, BHEL’s FY 2024–25 annual report reported revenue of ₹27,355 crore, EBITDA of ₹1,745 crore and PAT of ₹513 crore. These are reported annual figures, not order-book amounts. Compare them with the corresponding audited figures for another year, using consistent definitions and reporting bases. BHEL FY 2024–25 annual report.

Balance sheet: what resources and obligations sit behind the result?

Review cash and investments alongside receivables, inventories, work-in-progress or contract assets where disclosed, payables, borrowings, provisions and other liabilities. For a project and equipment supplier, working-capital balances can affect liquidity, but the balance sheet alone does not establish why a balance changed. Check the relevant notes and compare the actual movements across periods before attributing a cause.

Cash flow: did reported earnings turn into cash?

Compare operating cash flow with PAT and inspect the working-capital movements that help explain the difference. A gap between profit and cash is a prompt to examine period-specific details in the notes, not proof of a particular cause. The order book alone cannot explain cash conversion.

Notes and audit context: check comparability before calculating growth

Read the accounting policies, segment information, contingent liabilities, guarantees, related-party disclosures, management discussion and auditor comments. BHEL’s FY 2023–24 board report said EBITDA comparatives were restated because of a change in accounting policy. Take that restatement into account before calculating or interpreting year-over-year EBITDA growth. BHEL FY 2023–24 annual report.

Keep order receipts, outstanding orders and revenue separate

Order receipts measure orders booked during a period; the outstanding order book is the amount reported as outstanding at a particular date. Revenue is recognized as performance obligations are met under the applicable accounting rules. These are related measures, but they describe different stages and are not interchangeable.

Measure FY 2023–24 FY 2024–25 How to read it
Order receipts ₹77,907 crore (BHEL annual report) ₹92,535 crore, excluding taxes (BHEL annual report) Orders booked during the fiscal year; check the stated tax basis before comparing.
Outstanding order book ₹1,31,598 crore, net of taxes (BHEL annual report) ₹1,96,328 crore, excluding taxes, at 31 March 2025 (BHEL annual report) Reported outstanding position at the specified date, not revenue for that year.
Executable order book ₹1,23,916 crore at 31 March 2024 (BHEL annual report) not stated in the cited FY 2024–25 annual-report highlights A separately identified executable amount where disclosed; do not project the FY24 figure forward.
Revenue ₹22,921 crore (BHEL annual report) ₹27,355 crore (BHEL annual report) Annual revenue, distinct from orders received or outstanding.

Sources: BHEL FY 2023–24 annual report and BHEL FY 2024–25 annual report. The FY24 report presents outstanding orders net of taxes; FY25 highlights specify that receipts and the closing outstanding book exclude taxes. Preserve those qualifications rather than assuming every order figure has the same basis.

Assess whether the order pipeline is converting

To judge what an order book may mean for future business, follow the chain from new orders to outstanding contracts, execution disclosures, revenue and cash flow. Consider the reported sector mix and customer or project concentration, where the annual report provides those details. Then compare execution with working-capital movements and cash conversion: contracts in the pipeline do not by themselves establish when revenue or cash will arrive.

  • Check the report’s definition of order receipts and outstanding orders, including whether amounts include or exclude taxes.
  • Distinguish total outstanding orders from executable orders when both are disclosed, and keep each figure tied to its reporting date.
  • Look for execution, commissioning and revenue-recognition disclosures rather than assuming a completion schedule.
  • Use contract, segment and concentration disclosures to understand risks; do not infer margins or timing from the headline order-book total.
  • Compare the resulting revenue and profit with operating cash flow and balance-sheet working capital.

BHEL’s cited FY 2024–25 highlights report total outstanding orders but do not establish a directly comparable executable-order-book figure. Do not calculate or imply one from the FY24 executable amount.

A practical reading sequence

  1. Choose the right documents: open BHEL’s investor relations library and select the relevant annual report or results. Confirm period, entity basis, audit status and balance-sheet date.
  2. Trace earnings: follow revenue through operating costs, EBITDA or the report’s operating measure, finance costs, tax and PAT. Check margins and accounting-policy notes before comparing periods.
  3. Check financial position: inspect cash, receivables, inventories or contract balances, payables, debt, provisions and other liabilities, then consult the notes for explanations of material movements.
  4. Test cash conversion: compare operating cash flow with profit and identify the disclosed working-capital movements that explain differences.
  5. Connect orders to delivery: compare order receipts, dated outstanding and executable amounts where available, execution disclosures, revenue and cash flow—preserving the report’s definitions and tax basis throughout.
