If a Galaxy Z Fold security update fails to install, start by checking the connection, storage, and download status, then retry the update. If phone downloads keep failing, Samsung’s Smart Switch app may offer another way to update from a computer. The right next step depends on whether the update has been released for your exact device and carrier, what error appears, and whether the Fold still boots normally.
First, check whether the update is available for your Fold
An update that does not appear in Settings is not necessarily a fault. Samsung says releases can roll out in waves, and availability depends on the exact device variant and carrier. A phone unlocked by its original carrier may still need a SIM from that carrier to receive its updates; some carriers also require Wi-Fi. Check the release information from the carrier that originally supplied the device before treating a missing update as a failed installation. The menu name varies by model, carrier, and software version. On the Fold, open Settings and look for Software update or System updates, then check for an update again when connected to a stable network.
Match the fix to what happened
- The connection dropped or the update check failed: reconnect to a stable network and retry. Samsung notes that some carriers require Wi-Fi.
- The phone reports insufficient storage: free the amount of space the device identifies, then retry.
- The download stopped before finishing: use the update notification to resume the download rather than starting unrelated recovery steps.
- The download repeatedly fails: try Smart Switch on a Windows PC or Mac, if an update is offered for the connected Fold.

Choose between retrying on the phone and using Smart Switch

Update with Smart Switch
- On a Windows PC or Mac, install and open Samsung Smart Switch. Samsung’s instructions are at How to update your Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet.
- Connect the Fold to the computer with the USB cable supplied with the device. If prompted on the phone, choose Transferring files / Android Auto.
- If Smart Switch offers Update, select it and follow the prompts.
- Keep the cable connected and leave the Fold alone until the update finishes. Disconnecting or using the device during the process can interrupt it.
If Smart Switch does not offer an update, do not assume the computer can install a release that is unavailable to the device. Confirm carrier and variant availability instead.
If Smart Switch fails to connect or update
Samsung’s troubleshooting steps address both the computer app and the USB connection. Try them in this order, reconnecting the Fold and checking Smart Switch after each change:

- Check for updates to the computer’s operating system, then restart the computer.
- Remove Smart Switch and install it again.
- When the Fold prompts for a USB mode, select Transferring files / Android Auto.
- Try a different USB port or data-capable cable. Start with the cable supplied with the Fold; a replacement cable is only relevant if the existing cable or connection is failing.
- If the problem continues, try another computer.

When to stop and get help
If the Fold cannot boot normally after the failed update, stop ordinary update attempts and contact Samsung Support or an authorized service channel. Samsung says service is required in this situation. For an interrupted update that leads to emergency recovery, follow Samsung’s recovery guidance and back up important data first if the phone remains accessible: recovery may require a factory data reset and erase device data.

A factory reset is not a routine first fix for a failed security update. Avoid undocumented firmware flashing; it is not part of Samsung’s cited troubleshooting path and can create further problems.

Samsung’s official troubleshooting guide says: “If the update fails to install, in most cases the device will recover from the error, and try again, though some additional action may be required:” That is general Galaxy guidance, not a diagnosis of a particular Z Fold. The exact generation, carrier and region, software version, error text, and boot state determine which branch applies. If contacting support, have those details ready, along with whether the phone can still open Settings.
