Claude can help with conversation, writing, analysis, coding, and document-heavy tasks. Depending on the model and product setup, it can also interpret images or use tools to complete multi-step work. It can still get facts wrong or invent details, and its tools, safeguards, availability, and price vary. The practical rule: use Claude to assist, then verify important results—especially when a mistake could cause harm.

What Claude can do

Claude is a family of AI models available through consumer and developer products, not one fixed assistant with identical capabilities everywhere. Anthropic describes its models as useful for conversation, analysis, coding, creative work, and document and knowledge tasks. The model and the interface you use determine which inputs and functions are available.

Write, explain, analyze, and work with documents

Claude can help draft and revise text, explain concepts, analyze material, and work with documents or other knowledge tasks. These are potential uses, not guarantees that an answer is correct or suitable without review. Anthropic positions Sonnet 5.5 for well-scoped everyday coding, agent, and knowledge tasks, and Fable 5.1 for more complex coding and knowledge work; those are the company’s product descriptions, not independent performance guarantees. Understand image inputs

Some Claude models accept images as inputs and can process material such as diagrams, charts, and tables. Anthropic describes Fable 5.1 as supporting text, voice dictation, and image inputs. Don’t assume every Claude model or interface accepts the same formats or offers the same image capabilities; check the documentation for the specific model and product you’re using. Use tools and carry out multi-step tasks

In configured products, Claude can use tools to work across steps. Anthropic describes Fable 5.1 operating a browser and working across applications, including recovering from failed steps in a managed-agent setup. That does not mean every Claude conversation can browse or interact with apps: tool availability depends on the product surface, integrations, permissions, and configuration. Confirm what the particular setup can access before relying on it to take action. Anthropic’s Fable product page

What Claude cannot reliably do

Guarantee that an answer is true

Claude can make mistakes and fabricate details. Anthropic’s historical report on Claude 2 says models “still confabulate” and advises against relying on them alone for high-stakes situations where an error could cause harm. Treat that as a reliability warning, not as a current description of Claude’s web access or knowledge limits: the report is historical. Anthropic’s report, Unintended uses and limitations

  • Check important factual claims against primary sources rather than treating a confident response as proof.
  • For decisions where an error could cause harm, use Claude as an aid—not a substitute for qualified human judgment.

Do every task in every product

Capabilities depend on the model, product surface, tools, access level, and safeguards. A feature described for a managed agent or developer API should not be assumed to exist in a standard chat. Anthropic publishes model-specific system cards and descriptions; consult the relevant documentation for the setup in question. Anthropic Transparency Hub Anthropic system cards

Fulfil every request

Anthropic’s products include safeguards that can block, limit, or reroute some requests, particularly in sensitive areas. Claude’s response to a request can therefore depend not only on its model but also on the safeguards applied in that product. Anthropic Transparency Hub

Which Claude models and access routes are described currently?

Anthropic’s pages checked on October 7, 2026 describe Sonnet 5.5 access through Claude.ai on web, iOS, and Android, as well as developer access through the Claude Platform and listed cloud marketplaces. The company describes Fable 5.1 as available to Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise users, with separate API pricing. These are vendor-published details, not a complete feature-by-plan matrix; entitlements and availability can change. Sonnet product page Fable product page

API prices published when checked

Model Input price Output price Qualification
Sonnet 5.5 $2 per million tokens $10 per million tokens Anthropic-published API prices, checked October 7, 2026; verify current pricing before use.
Fable 5.1 $10 per million tokens $50 per million tokens Anthropic-published API prices, checked October 7, 2026; verify current pricing before use.

Model names and lifecycle can change

Anthropic’s developer documentation lists active, deprecated, and retired model IDs with estimated retirement dates. On the page checked October 7, 2026, Sonnet 4.5 was marked deprecated, with retirement listed for November 30, 2026, and Sonnet 5.5 named as its recommended replacement. Developers should verify model IDs and lifecycle status in the live documentation before building or updating an integration. Anthropic model documentation

Mythos 5.1 is not general access

Anthropic says Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1 are the same underlying model with different safeguard levels. Fable is generally available under Anthropic’s stated access terms; Mythos 5.1 is limited to trusted access programs and Claude Security, with safeguards designed for cybersecurity and life-sciences work. General readers should not assume they can access Mythos. Anthropic’s Mythos access information

How to decide whether Claude fits a task

  • Identify the task: Is it drafting, analysis, coding, or work involving documents? Match the job to the model’s stated role, while treating vendor descriptions as claims rather than guarantees.
  • Check inputs and tools: Confirm that the model accepts the material you need to provide and that the specific interface has any required integrations or permissions.
  • Consider the stakes: Verify consequential claims with primary sources and involve a qualified person when a wrong answer could cause harm.
  • Check current terms: Before choosing a plan or integrating an API, confirm current availability, safeguards, prices, and model lifecycle in Anthropic’s documentation.
