There is no single safety verdict or universal rule for products called “nanofertilizers.” The term can describe different materials and designs, so farmers should identify the exact formulation, follow its label, and check the rules for the product category and jurisdiction where it will be used. Evidence about one formulation does not establish the safety of another.

What “nanofertilizer” can mean

The label may refer to a nutrient in nanoscale form, a nutrient carried or encapsulated by a nanomaterial, or another formulation that uses nanotechnology. Those are not interchangeable. EFSA has noted that the composition of many reported nanofertilisers was not specified, which makes a broad safety judgment especially difficult.

For a specific product, start with its ingredient and formulation information, intended crops, application method, use rates, and label instructions. If the material or carrier is not clear, do not infer its identity from the marketing term; ask the manufacturer or supplier for product-specific information.

Why safety depends on the product and how it is used

Risk depends on the material, carrier, co-formulants, dose, route of exposure, and conditions after application. Workers may be exposed while handling or applying a product, and environmental release can create questions about fate in soil, water, crops, and the food chain. Reviews of agricultural nanotechnology identify gaps in understanding hazards, exposure levels, and how materials behave after dispersion.

Potential agronomic benefits do not resolve those safety questions. A 2019 review discusses possible improvements in nutrient-use efficiency and reduced nutrient leaching, while also warning that environmental release and food-chain exposure may pose health risks. These are possibilities discussed in the review—not guaranteed results for a particular product or field.

There is no evidence here to support one universal personal protective equipment recommendation for every nanofertilizer. Use the product’s own handling instructions and applicable workplace requirements; do not select a respirator, glove, or other control based only on the word “nano.”

What a safety study can—and cannot—show

A 2023 study tested one biogenic urea nanoparticle formulation, called TNU. The authors reported a particle size of 12.14 ± 7.79 nm. In the study’s human lung fibroblast assay, they reported no cytotoxicity or detrimental mitochondrial activity at concentrations up to 1000 μg/mL over 72 hours. In a rabbit ocular model, they reported no acute or sub-lethal effects up to 15 μg/mL over the stated 21-day assessment.

Those findings are limited to that formulation, the tested assays, and their exposure conditions. They do not demonstrate safety during field application, chronic exposure, other exposure routes, or use of other nanofertilizer materials. A laboratory or animal result is not a category-wide clearance.

Which rules apply?

European Union

Regulation (EU) 2019/1009 sets a framework for EU fertilising products made available on the EU market, including product function categories, component material categories, conformity requirements, and CE marking. The regulation is not a blanket approval of every product marketed as a nanofertiliser. Whether a particular product meets the applicable requirements depends on its category and circumstances; the cited legal text does not establish approval for any named farm product. Read the regulation and current amendments for the relevant product category: Regulation (EU) 2019/1009, consolidated text.

Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2024/2770 updates requirements for certain polymers used in EU fertilising products. For relevant products containing specified polymers, its provisions include label instructions concerning buffer zones or distances from surface water. These provisions apply to the specified polymers and circumstances; they are not a general rule for every nanoparticle or nanofertiliser. See the delegated regulation.

  • The Ultimate Year-Round Tool: More than just a seeder! this multi-functional broadcast spreader handles all seasons. Use it for sowing grass in spring, fertilizing in summer, spreading herbicides in fall, and salting icy driveways in winter.

Food and consumer risk assessment

EFSA’s 2021 guidance addresses assessment where nanoparticles are quantified in food commodities. It says particles should be identified and characterised and their risks assessed, especially for oral exposure. This is scientific guidance for risk assessment, not evidence that a particular farm product is approved or prohibited: EFSA Guidance on Nanomaterial Risk Assessment.

Other jurisdictions

The cited sources do not establish current requirements in the United States or other jurisdictions. Do not assume that EU rules apply elsewhere, or that one country’s product status determines another’s. Check with the relevant agricultural or fertilizer regulator for the location where the product will be marketed and used.

A practical check before using a product

  1. Identify the exact product. Record its name and formulation, and determine whether the nano-scale material is the nutrient itself, a carrier or encapsulant, or another component.
  2. Read the label for the intended use. Confirm the crops, application method, rate, and handling instructions match your planned use.
  3. Check the local product category and requirements. Where applicable, verify the product’s regulatory status and conformity information with the responsible authority; a “nano” claim alone is not proof of approval.
  4. Assess exposure and evidence in context. Consider who may handle or apply it, the application route, and what product-specific environmental or toxicology evidence is available. Do not treat results for another formulation as a substitute.
  5. Resolve missing information before relying on the product. Ask the supplier or regulator about unclear ingredients, label directions, or compliance obligations. Use formulation-specific instructions rather than generic PPE or testing advice.
