Foldable phones can handle regular use, but their flexible inner screens and hinges need more care than a conventional phone screen. Keep grit and small objects away from the hinge and between the screens, avoid sharp pressure on the inner display, and leave its factory-fitted protector in place unless the manufacturer directs otherwise. There is no single lifespan figure for all foldables: durability claims and water-resistance ratings apply to specific models and conditions.
How durable are foldable phones?
Durability depends on the exact phone, its condition, and how it is handled. Fold-cycle figures are not universal lifespan guarantees, and the available manufacturer guidance does not establish a comparable failure rate or expected service life across brands.
Samsung says its Galaxy Z Fold3 and Galaxy Z Flip3 endured over 200,000 folds in its tests. Samsung relates that test figure to 100 folds a day for five years under its quality-standard calculation, but says testing took place under certain temperature conditions and that cycle life is not guaranteed under other conditions. It is a historical, model-specific manufacturer test—not a promise that an individual phone will last five years or a result that can be applied to newer models or other brands. Samsung’s explanation of the Fold3 and Flip3 test does not provide an independent comparison with other foldables.
How to protect the inner screen and hinge
Check for obstructions before folding
Before closing the phone, check that nothing is caught between the screens or around the hinge. A card, coin, key, crumb, or grain of grit can press against the inner display when the phone closes. Google cautions Pixel Fold owners: “Flexible screens are softer than traditional phone screens, so avoid contact with crumbs, fingernails and sharp objects.” Samsung and Motorola provide similar model-specific warnings. Fold without forcing or pressing
Open and close the device normally rather than forcing it, and do not press the inner screen with a hard or sharp object. Samsung also warns against folding its devices backward. Follow the handling instructions for the exact model, since one brand’s guidance should not be treated as a universal mechanism for every foldable. Leave the inner-screen protector alone
The factory-installed inner protector is designed for the foldable display, so do not peel it off or apply a generic replacement. Samsung recommends authorized service for replacement; Motorola says its Razr protector should be replaced only by Motorola-approved service personnel; and Google advises Pixel Fold owners not to remove the protector or add a third-party one. How to clean a foldable phone
Use a soft, lint-free cloth and clean gently. For example, Samsung advises using a soft, dry cloth on a dusty or dirty hinge, while Motorola’s Razr 50 guide recommends a dry, soft cloth for the display. Avoid abrasive materials, do not spray cleaner directly onto the screen, and keep moisture out of ports and other openings. Cleaning-liquid and disinfectant rules vary by model; consult the phone’s own care guide before using them. Are foldable phones waterproof or dustproof?
No general answer applies to every foldable. Check the exact model’s IP rating and the manufacturer’s exclusions. A rating describes specified test conditions, not immunity from water or dust in everyday use; resistance can also diminish through wear or damage.

- Recent Samsung models: Samsung’s US care page lists IP48 for the Galaxy Z TriFold, Z Fold7, Z Flip7, Z Fold6, and Z Flip6. It says those models can resist fresh water up to five feet deep for up to 30 minutes, advises against beach or pool use, and says no Galaxy foldable is dust resistant. - Motorola Razr 50: Its guide describes IPX8 resistance to still fresh water under controlled laboratory conditions, but says the phone is not dustproof and warns that dust may reduce hinge life and damage the display. Motorola Razr 50 hardware and care guide
- Motorola Razr Fold: Motorola’s guide discusses IP46, IP48, and IP49 tests for that model, warns that resistance decreases with normal wear, and says the phone is not waterproof or dustproof. - Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold: Google says this model meets IP68 under IEC 60529 when it leaves the factory, but is not dustproof or waterproof. Do cases help protect foldable phones?
A case made for the exact foldable model is a reasonable optional choice for protecting its exterior. Check that it fits the device and hinge as intended. A case does not remove the need to check for particles before folding, protect the inner screen from sharp objects, or make a phone dustproof.
