On a Windows 11 Arm laptop, an app can run through x86 or x64 emulation while a feature it depends on still fails because a required driver or system component is not Arm-compatible. Start by identifying the exact app and symptom, then check for updates and the publisher’s support for your version and Windows release. If the failure involves hardware, anti-cheat, or another system-level component, verify that it has an Arm-compatible driver; emulation cannot supply one.
1. Identify the exact failure
Before reinstalling anything, record the device, Windows version, app version, and the point where the problem occurs. In Windows, open Settings > System > About and note the Windows edition and version. Confirm that the laptop uses an Arm processor, then record how you obtained the app and what fails.
- Installation: Does setup fail, or does the app install but fail to launch?
- Feature: Does the app open but fail when printing, accessing a device, signing in, or using a particular feature?
- Timing: Did the issue begin after an app or Windows update?
- Scope: Does the problem affect the whole app or only a feature that uses hardware or a system component?
These details help the publisher distinguish an app-version issue from an Arm architecture or driver limitation. Microsoft does not provide a universal diagnostic utility that identifies every app dependency.
2. Update the app and check for an Arm64 version
Use the source that distributes the app, then check the publisher’s current support information for the exact app version and Windows Arm support. The Microsoft Store is one source for Windows apps, but it is not the only one.

- For a Microsoft Store app: Open the Store and check for app updates.
- For other software: Visit the publisher’s site, check for a current build, and look for a native Arm64 version or a statement that the app supports Windows on Arm.
- Verify the needed features: If the publisher offers only an x86 or x64 version, ask whether the specific feature you need works on Windows 11 Arm. Some x86 and x64 apps can run through Windows emulation, but that does not guarantee that every app or feature will work. Microsoft’s Windows Arm FAQ explains the distinction.
For an older app that still has problems after updates, try Windows’ general Program Compatibility Troubleshooter: Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Program Compatibility Troubleshooter. This may help with older-app issues; it cannot make an unsupported Arm driver or system component compatible. See Microsoft’s instructions for older apps.
3. Check whether the failing feature needs a driver
App code and drivers have different compatibility requirements. Windows 11 Arm can emulate some x86 and x64 apps, but a driver must be included with Windows or supplied by its developer for Arm. Emulation does not translate an incompatible driver.

Look for a driver dependency if the failure involves a printer, scanner, accessory, specialized hardware, or a feature that installs or relies on a system-level component. Microsoft identifies antivirus and antimalware products, virtualization software, assistive technology, input method editors, cloud storage apps, and game anti-cheat as categories that may require extra care. Ask the app or device maker whether the exact product and feature are supported on Windows Arm, and check for a driver for the exact device model.
If the maker does not offer the required Arm driver, the dependent app or hardware feature may not work fully. Ask the maker whether it supports the function or offers another workflow. Do not expect compatibility settings or app emulation to fix a missing driver.

4. Troubleshoot printers and other peripherals
Windows 11 Arm supports most printers, including many that use Mopria, but setup and features can still depend on the printer’s driver and software. If the manufacturer’s installer fails because it does not support Arm, Microsoft Surface guidance suggests trying to add the device through Windows Settings instead. This is an alternative setup route, not a guarantee that every printer feature will work.
- Check the printer manufacturer’s support page for your exact model and Windows Arm or Arm64 driver availability.
- If its installer is incompatible, try adding or setting up the printer through Windows Settings.
- Check the manufacturer’s information for the features you need, such as scanning or device utilities, not just basic printing.
Microsoft describes this approach for Surface Arm-based devices in its guide to software and peripherals on Surface Arm devices. For other accessories, use the same model-specific driver check with the accessory maker.

5. Check games and system-integrated apps by exact product
A game may launch while its anti-cheat component prevents play, or a Windows-integrated app may fail because it needs a driver or system customization that is not supported. Check the app or game publisher’s current support information for the exact title, version, Windows release, and features you use.
For games, Microsoft points users to the Windows Arm FAQ and the Works on WoA listing. Microsoft describes Works on WoA as a third-party, open-source list to which Microsoft contributes. Treat it as an evolving community resource, not a guarantee for every game release, update, or anti-cheat configuration.

For antivirus, assistive technology, input methods, cloud storage, and virtualization, check the vendor’s support page and ask about the exact Windows Arm build. Do not disable Windows security or install an unsupported security product as a compatibility workaround.
6. Check the Microsoft 365 edition if Office is affected
If you use 32-bit Microsoft 365 Apps on a Windows 11 Arm PC, Microsoft’s support notice says feature updates stopped in October 2025 and security updates will end in December 2026. Check an Office app’s Account or About screen to see whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit. Microsoft says the 64-bit edition requires Windows 11 and its installer detects and migrates 32-bit Microsoft 365 Apps products. Because support dates can change, check Microsoft’s current end-of-support notice before acting.
How to compare an app or device alternative
If you are deciding whether to keep using a product or choose an alternative, compare the specific dependencies and features rather than relying on a broad claim that it “runs” on Windows Arm.
