Robinhood says it holds small amounts of cryptocurrency for business operations, but not significant amounts for its own account. Its 2025 annual filing does not state how much Bitcoin, if any, it holds specifically. The filing also says the company does not commingle its operational crypto with customer crypto.
That is separate from Bitcoin held for customers through Robinhood Crypto, which keeps custody of the assets and records customers’ ownership and balances. The sources reviewed do not show that a Robinhood company purchase changes a customer’s recorded Bitcoin balance or establish that a specific purchase moved Bitcoin’s market price.
What Robinhood says it owns
In its 2025 annual filing, Robinhood Markets, Inc. says: “We currently do not hold significant amounts of cryptocurrency for our own account.” It adds: “We hold small amounts of cryptocurrency assets to solely support our business operations, and we do not commingle cryptocurrencies with those of our users.” The company also says it does not seek to profit from proprietary trading and instead facilitates customer transactions. These are Robinhood’s disclosures for its 2025 annual reporting period, not independent verification of its holdings. Read the 2025 annual filing.
The filing does not give a Bitcoin-specific amount. Robinhood’s quarterly filing dated July 30, 2026 discusses custody risks but does not provide a newer quantified balance of Bitcoin owned for the company’s own account. Do not treat customer assets held in custody, or trading volume, as Robinhood-owned Bitcoin. Read the July 30, 2026 quarterly filing.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Are the Bitcoin in a Robinhood account yours?
Robinhood says customer crypto is held in custody by Robinhood Crypto, LLC, which maintains records of customer ownership and account balances. Its filing describes controls to verify the amounts held for customers in omnibus wallets. That is distinct from the company’s own operational holdings, which it says are not commingled with customer crypto.
With a custodial account, Robinhood controls the private keys for the addresses holding the crypto. Customers see and manage their recorded positions through their accounts, but do not receive the keys to Robinhood’s custodial addresses. Robinhood says customers can transfer supported crypto to an external wallet; in that arrangement, the wallet holder controls the keys and takes responsibility for keeping them safe. Could Robinhood’s Bitcoin buying affect customers?
Customer balances and custody
The reviewed disclosures do not say that a company purchase changes a customer’s recorded balance or ownership claim. Robinhood’s statement that its own operational crypto is not commingled with customer crypto is relevant to that distinction, but it does not eliminate the separate risks of custodial services.
Bitcoin’s market price
A sufficiently large purchase can, in principle, add demand to a market. But the sources reviewed do not establish that Robinhood made a particular Bitcoin purchase or that one of its purchases caused a price move. A claim that Robinhood buying Bitcoin raised or lowered the price would therefore go beyond the available evidence.

Your trade execution
A customer’s purchase or sale can be affected by ordinary market conditions regardless of what Robinhood holds for its own operations. Robinhood says market orders use buffers intended to account for dramatic price moves; limit orders execute only at qualifying prices; and displayed buy and sell estimates can differ because of the bid-ask spread. Market liquidity, price movement, maintenance windows and settlement timing can also matter. Robinhood’s U.S. crypto trading information.
Custody, protection and transfer risks
Robinhood Crypto is a separate service from Robinhood Financial LLC, the entity that provides brokerage services for stocks, ETFs and options. Robinhood says crypto is not a stock, is not FDIC insured, and that crypto positions are not protected by the Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC). The SIPC coverage figures Robinhood lists—up to $500,000 per account type, including a $250,000 cash limit—do not apply to Bitcoin held through Robinhood Crypto. Robinhood says it stores crypto in a mix of cold and hot wallets, with most in cold storage, and that crime insurance covers a portion of assets across storage systems against theft, including cybersecurity breaches. This is a limited company-stated measure, not a guarantee that every customer balance is insured or that every type of loss is covered. Robinhood’s U.S. crypto security information.
Robinhood’s July 30, 2026 filing warns that loss of or unauthorized access to customer crypto private keys could impair customers’ ability to trade or result in losses. Transfers have user-error risks too: for example, sending crypto to an incompatible network address may cause loss. With self-custody, you control the keys, but you also carry the responsibility for securing them and the recovery risk if access is lost.

What to consider before keeping Bitcoin on Robinhood or transferring it
| Factor | Robinhood Crypto custody | External self-custody |
|---|---|---|
| Who controls the private keys? | Robinhood Crypto controls the keys to its custodial addresses; the customer’s account records their position. | The wallet holder controls the keys. |
| Transfers | Transfers out are available for supported crypto; availability depends on the asset and network. | Transfers depend on the wallet and compatible network. |
| Recovery responsibility | Access and custody depend on Robinhood’s service and systems. | The user is responsible for securing keys and recovery information. |
| Protections and risks | Robinhood says crypto is not SIPC protected; custody or key failures could interfere with trading or cause losses. | Self-custody avoids relying on a custodian for key control, but mistakes or lost keys can make assets inaccessible. |
Neither option removes risk. Before transferring, confirm that the destination wallet supports the asset and network, and verify the address and network selected. Robinhood’s transfer support explains the available process for supported crypto.
