A typical weapon evolution needs a fully leveled base weapon, its matching passive item, and an eligible Treasure Chest—but some weapons and special items follow different rules. Use the in-game Unlocks section to find concrete goals for future runs.
How a beginner run works
Runs are built around surviving while attacks deal with approaching enemies. Pickups such as experience gems help you level up and choose upgrades. Early choices matter because each weapon you take can compete for upgrade opportunities with the others.
Start with a manageable set of weapons
Steam’s official beginner tips recommend taking two or three offensive weapons early and leveling them one at a time. This is a starting suggestion, not a universal build rule: concentrating upgrades can make your chosen attacks stronger sooner, while taking many weapons can spread upgrades across more options.
When deciding whether to add a weapon, consider whether it reliably hits nearby threats, whether it needs aiming or deliberate positioning, what passive item its evolution requires, and whether you can spare an upgrade slot to develop it. These are practical decision factors, not a tested weapon ranking.

Keep moving; you do not need to chase every pickup
Steam’s beginner tips say that gems and items do not disappear. You can prioritize staying alive and return to accessible pickups as your route allows. That guidance is scoped to the gems and items described on Steam; it should not be assumed to cover every special pickup or game mode.
Experiment with power-ups
Steam suggests Armour and Luck as reasonable power-up options for new players, and says power-ups can be refunded freely. Try an investment, see how it suits your approach, and adjust if you prefer a different benefit. Neither option is mandatory.

Weapons, passive items, and evolutions
A weapon is an active attack. A passive item provides a separate bonus and may also be part of a weapon’s evolution requirement. In the common pattern, you need to fully level a weapon, carry its corresponding passive item, and open a Treasure Chest that is eligible to award an evolution.
Two representative examples are:

These examples are not a complete combination chart. Not every weapon evolves, and special items can have different requirements. The weapon reference at the Vampire Survivors wiki covers many more weapons and special cases, but its catalog may not reflect every current base-game and DLC detail. Check a current in-game reference or maintained chart for an unfamiliar combination rather than assuming the common pattern applies.

How to evolve?
- Choose a weapon to develop. Keep its upgrade needs in mind as you make level-up choices.
- Level that weapon fully. A partially upgraded base weapon does not meet the usual evolution pattern.
- Acquire its matching passive item. Confirm the pairing for the specific weapon; not every item follows the same rules.
- Open an eligible Treasure Chest. A chest is not a guarantee of an evolution unless the relevant requirements and chest conditions are met.
Because special cases exist, treat these as the typical sequence—not a guarantee for every weapon or chest.
Where to find your next unlock
Open the in-game Unlocks section and use its listed criteria as a checklist for possible goals. This is practical advice reported in a community discussion about the collaboratively maintained wiki, not a captured official developer statement about the menu. When you are unsure what to attempt next, choose one listed requirement and make it the focus of a run. That gives each attempt a clear objective without needing to memorize a full item catalog.
