In the United States, rideshare apps describe driver screening as a combination of identity verification, driving-record checks, and criminal-background checks. They also offer in-app reporting and emergency tools, but the checks and tools do not guarantee that every risk will be caught or prevented. Here is how Uber and Lyft describe their systems, and what to do if you need to report a concern.
How do rideshare apps check drivers?
Screening before a driver’s first trip is separate from confirming who is behind the wheel during a particular ride. The platforms describe both screening and other safety features, but their public materials do not establish that either system can eliminate risk.
Uber’s U.S. screening process
Uber says its U.S. process begins with identity verification: applicants submit identifying information and a government ID. The company then reviews a motor vehicle record (MVR); applicants who pass that stage proceed to a criminal-background check. Uber says potential criminal records are checked against source records and that a person reviews the final decision to disqualify an applicant. These are Uber’s descriptions of its process, not an independent audit. Uber’s June 26, 2026 account of its background checks
Uber says it runs criminal checks annually and monitors for new charges or convictions between checks. Its screening overview says drivers are screened before their first trip and re-screened at least annually. It also notes that annual driving-history reruns do not apply in New York City. Checks and lookback periods can differ under state and local law. Uber’s driver-screening overview

Lyft’s published screening description
Lyft says every driver completes verification, background checks, and mandatory safety education before driving. Its public safety page does not give the same procedural detail about record sources or how decisions are adjudicated. Lyft’s safety overview
Does a background check prove the driver is the person shown in the app?
No. A background check is a screening of a driver’s records; it is not, by itself, proof that the person who arrives for a specific trip is the account holder. Uber describes identity verification as part of screening, while Lyft says drivers complete verification, but the cited public pages do not specify enough about in-trip identity matching to establish exactly how either platform confirms a driver’s identity on every ride. Check that the app’s driver name, photo, and vehicle details match the person and car before getting in; contact the platform if they do not.

What can driver screening catch—and what can’t it guarantee?
Screening can identify some disqualifying records, but its reach depends on available records and applicable law. Uber says court records can be fragmented or restricted and that human or technical errors can occur. It also cautions that screening cannot predict future behavior. In Hannah Nilles’s June 26, 2026 Uber article, the company’s Head of Safety for the Americas put it plainly: “No background check is perfect or can predict the future.” Uber’s explanation of its process and limitations
Uber reports that its screening approach has prevented 3.5 million people from joining or remaining on the platform since 2017. That is Uber’s company-reported figure, not an independently audited estimate. The same article says around 70% of rejected applications are rejected at the MVR stage; that figure describes Uber’s process, not the rideshare industry as a whole. Uber’s June 2026 figures

What happens after you report a rideshare driver?
Reports are not all handled the same way. Uber says it reviews reports received through Support and weighs the seriousness of the reported conduct and the information available. It says a single serious report can result in deactivation. Lower-severity or less-detailed reports may result in a warning and an account note that can inform later reviews. Uber says it does not apply a fixed “three strikes” rule. This is Uber’s description of its own process; it does not promise a particular outcome for any report. Report a concern in Uber
- For a non-urgent concern: open Help in the app and select the relevant trip to contact Support about what happened.
- For an immediate threat: use the app’s Emergency Button or call 911. The features available can vary by region.
- For a crash: Uber advises contacting police and paramedics if anyone is injured or there is damage. When it is safe, keep the police report number and take photos, then report the crash through the Driver app’s Safety Toolkit. Uber’s U.S. driver-safety instructions
Report a concern in Lyft
Lyft says riders can reach a specialized safety team by phone or chat 24/7. Its safety overview also describes access to ADT emergency professionals through the app. Availability and features may depend on location and circumstances. Lyft’s safety overview

How do rideshare apps monitor a trip in progress?
Trip monitoring and emergency response are different from pre-trip background screening. Lyft says it monitors for unusual ride activity, including a mid-ride cancellation or a long stop, and may follow up through Smart Trip Check-In. Lyft also describes its 24/7 safety team and in-app access to ADT emergency professionals. These are Lyft’s feature descriptions, not a guarantee that every unusual event will be detected or that a particular response will be available in every location. Lyft’s safety overview
Uber’s U.S. driver-safety page describes in-app reporting and an Emergency Button, but the cited materials do not establish a directly comparable set of ride-monitoring triggers across Uber and Lyft. Do not treat a list of features as proof that one platform is safer overall.

Not from the figures covered here. Uber’s U.S. Safety Report covers incidents from January 1, 2017 through December 31, 2018, uses defined serious-incident categories, and explains its own methodology. It is historical data for a specified period and geography, not a current cross-platform comparison. Uber’s 2017–2018 U.S. Safety Report methodology
The cited public materials do not provide a current, independent, apples-to-apples measure of the share of drivers who pass screening, the share of reports substantiated, or comparative incident rates for Uber and Lyft. A meaningful comparison would require comparable dates, geographies, incident definitions, and denominators—not just a count or a feature list.
