If your Galaxy Z Flip’s inner screen stays black after you unfold it, first check whether the phone is frozen or whether only the inner display is affected. Check the cover screen and charging setup, then try the restart steps for your exact model. If the inner screen remains unresponsive—especially after a drop, liquid exposure, or visible hinge damage—stop troubleshooting and contact Samsung support for your model and country.
Check what still responds
Before changing settings, note what happens when you unfold the phone. Does the cover display light up or respond? Does the phone vibrate or ring? Is the inner screen black, flickering, or showing an image? These clues help describe the problem to a technician, but they do not identify a failed component on their own.
If the cover display works while the inner screen does not, that is a different symptom from a phone that appears completely unresponsive. Either way, avoid repeatedly opening and closing the phone to test it.
Check for damage and charging problems
Look over the phone, charger, and USB cable for obvious damage. Samsung’s black-screen troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the charging accessories as well as the device. If the battery may be depleted, try a known-good compatible charger and cable. Confirm compatibility with your exact Z Flip model.

Do not press on the inner screen, force the hinge, or attempt an improvised hinge repair. A charger may help if the battery is empty; it will not fix physical damage to the hinge or display.
Force-restart the exact model
Button combinations and hold times are not confirmed as universal across Galaxy Z Flip generations. Check the user manual for your model before using a forced restart.

Galaxy Z Flip6 example
The Galaxy Z Flip6 user manual says to press and hold the Side button and Volume Down together for more than seven seconds when the device is frozen and unresponsive. This is a Z Flip6 instruction, not a verified timing for every Z Flip.
Samsung’s general black-screen guidance
For a blank or black Galaxy screen, Samsung’s general support guidance says: “You can also try forcing a restart by pressing and holding the Power and Volume down buttons for 20 seconds, and then charging the device for at least one hour.” This guidance covers Galaxy devices generally; it is not a universal Z Flip-specific restart instruction. Use the manual for your model if its steps differ.

Use Safe mode if you can operate the phone
Samsung says Safe mode runs core applications and can help determine whether a downloaded app is contributing to a problem. Follow the instructions for your model in Samsung’s Safe mode troubleshooting guidance.
- If the symptom stops in Safe mode: a downloaded app may be involved. Consider uninstalling recently added apps one at a time and checking whether the problem returns.
- If the symptom continues in Safe mode: Samsung says hardware is more likely and advises arranging service. Safe mode cannot repair a damaged display or hinge.
When to contact Samsung support
Arrange service if the inner screen still will not respond after the basic checks and a model-correct restart, or if the issue persists in Safe mode. Contact support promptly if the problem began after a drop or liquid exposure, or if the hinge or screen shows visible damage or abnormal behavior. Describe which display responds, whether the phone vibrates or rings, and what restart steps you tried.
