Before your first Uber, Lyft, or similar ride, find the app’s emergency-help, trip-sharing, trip-monitoring, and vehicle-verification tools. At pickup, match the driver, car, and license plate to the trip shown in the app before you get in. These features offer ways to verify, communicate, and report; their presence alone does not guarantee that an incident will be prevented.

What to check before requesting a ride

  1. Find emergency help: Locate the in-app emergency option before pickup, and know how to call your local emergency number if the app is unavailable.
  2. Choose a trusted contact: Set up trip sharing or location sharing with someone you trust. Confirm it is active for the ride, and agree on what they should do if they cannot reach you. Sharing does not mean the contact will monitor your trip continuously.
  3. Review verification options: See whether PIN verification is available and how to use it. It is an extra check, not a substitute for matching the vehicle and driver to the details in your app.
  4. Review monitoring and recording settings: Check which tools are available for your account and location, what action they require, and what notices apply.

Verify the driver and vehicle at pickup

Compare the driver, vehicle description, and license plate with the information in your app before entering. Do not rely only on a matching name or car model. If the details do not match, do not get in; use the app’s support or safety options to resolve the issue.

Optional PIN verification

Uber describes Verify Your Ride as an optional four-digit PIN that a rider can give the driver. Lyft describes optional PIN Verification, which requires the driver to enter the PIN before starting the trip. Availability can depend on location and settings, so check the app rather than assuming the option is present. Follow the app’s instructions and share the PIN only with the driver for your booked ride.

Know what emergency help does in your location

Uber’s rider safety page describes an in-app Emergency Button that can connect to 911 and display trip details for the dispatcher. Uber says that in select Canadian cities, information is automatically shared with emergency services when a rider calls. Lyft describes Emergency Help and access to ADT emergency professionals through the app. Those descriptions do not establish identical connections in every city or country. Check the help screen in your app to understand the option available to you; in immediate danger, call your local emergency number if you can.

Supports U1 or higher microSD cards up to 256 GB (card not specified in the product specifications). Includes date stamping, adjustable exposure, WDR setting, built-in microphone/speaker, and Type-C power input.

Set up trip sharing before the ride

Uber’s Share My Trip lets riders choose trusted contacts and create reminders to share trip details. Lyft lists Location Sharing. Before pickup, select the person you want to share with and check that sharing is active for this trip. Let the contact know whether you expect them to check in or take action if you miss an agreed update; do not assume they are watching your location live.

Understand automatic trip checks and support

Uber says RideCheck uses sensor and GPS data to help identify events such as a long stop or route detour, then checks in and offers tools. Lyft says Smart Trip Check-In contacts riders if it notices something unusual. Uber also describes on-trip reporting and 24/7 incident support. These are platform descriptions: the official feature pages reviewed do not publish independent detection-accuracy or incident-prevention rates. Treat an automated check-in as a prompt to assess the situation and use available help, not as a guarantee that the platform will detect a problem.

Know the limits of audio and ride recording

Recording availability, storage, access, and legal requirements vary by platform and location. Read the app’s current instructions and notices, and check the law where the trip takes place before recording.

Uber recording details depend on region

Uber’s US page says riders can set up audio recording in Safety preferences or start it from the Safety Toolkit, then may share the recording with Uber after the trip. The page describes recordings as encrypted and inaccessible to the rider, driver, or support unless attached to an incident report. It also notes state-specific consent requirements.

This measure is to prevent the dash cam from overheating.

Uber’s UK page describes a different setup: a recording is stored encrypted on the phone, and Uber cannot access its contents unless the rider opens an incident report and includes it. That page says an unshared recording is automatically deleted after 14 days. These details apply to the respective regional pages; check your local feature information rather than assuming the same rules everywhere.

Lyft recording availability

Lyft says audio Ride Recording is available to riders and drivers in US and Canadian regions. Its safety page also says drivers may use video recording and riders will be notified when it is on. Check the in-app notice and instructions for current availability and settings.

How to compare safety features without overclaiming

Official feature lists can help you understand what each app offers, but they are not a head-to-head assessment of safety outcomes. To compare what is useful for your trip, check:

  • Whether the feature is available in your country, city, account, and app version.
  • Whether emergency help connects to local emergency services, a platform team, or a third-party professional.
  • What trip or location information may be shared, and with whom.
  • Whether you need to enable a setting or take an action during the ride.
  • For recording, how files are stored, when support can access them, and what notices or consent rules apply.

The official rider feature pages reviewed do not provide an attributable statistic showing how much these tools reduce risk, prevent incidents, or improve outcomes. Feature availability should not be treated as proof that one rideshare platform is safer overall.
