To keep cut flowers fresh while limiting microbes, start with a washed vase, clean water and correctly mixed commercial flower food. Remove leaves that would sit underwater, replace cloudy or smelly water promptly, and keep the arrangement cool and away from ripening fruit. These steps reduce the conditions that foul vase water and interfere with stems’ water uptake.
Why microbes matter in vase water
Bacteria and other microorganisms can build up in vase water and plug the water-conducting channels in flower stems. When uptake is obstructed, blooms may wilt sooner. Dirty containers, submerged foliage and decaying plant material can contribute to contaminated water.
Flower food helps address more than one need: commercial preservatives typically provide carbohydrate for the flower, an acidifier and an ingredient that controls microbes. The exact formulation varies, so use the packet’s directions rather than guessing at a concentration. Too much preservative can harm flowers.
Prepare the vase and stems
- Wash the vase. Clean it with soap and water before arranging flowers; rinse away residue.
- Remove underwater leaves. Strip off foliage that would sit below the waterline so it does not decay in the vase.
- Make a fresh cut. With a clean, sharp knife or shears, trim stem ends, then put the stems in water promptly.
- Mix the solution. Add commercial cut-flower food according to its packet. If you do not have flower food, clean water is a safer general choice than an improvised household mixture, according to Iowa State University Extension.
Maintain the water before it turns foul
Check the water level and clarity regularly. Replace cloudy or smelly water, clean the vase if needed, and prepare a fresh flower-food solution. Illinois Extension suggests changing water every two to three days; the Royal Horticultural Society recommends changes and stem recuts every two to four days. Treat these as practical schedules, not fixed deadlines: change the water sooner if it becomes cloudy or smells.

Recutting stems during a water change is recommended by several sources and can provide a fresh cut surface. Iowa State notes that recutting is not necessary if the water change is done promptly. Use a clean, sharp tool either way.
Choose a suitable location
- Keep the arrangement cool and out of direct heat.
- Avoid drafts and other conditions that quickly dry or warm the flowers.
- Keep flowers away from ripening fruit, which releases ethylene and can accelerate floral aging.
- Remove fading blooms and decaying foliage as they appear.
Should you use flower food or a homemade mixture?
Commercial cut-flower preservative is the most straightforward choice when used as directed. Common packets may combine sugar, bleach and citric acid; more generally, flower foods supply a carbohydrate, an acidifier and a microbial-control ingredient.

Guidance on homemade mixtures differs. The Royal Horticultural Society offers a water, vinegar and sugar recipe but cautions that homemade preservative is unlikely to work as well as proprietary flower food. Iowa State University Extension warns that household ingredients and concoctions—including sugar, aspirin, bleach, soda and vinegar—may perform less well and may shorten vase life. For broadly applicable care, use commercial food according to its label, or use clean water if none is available; do not assume a household recipe is equivalent.
