The Intel Surface Laptop 15 is the stronger choice when you need broad Windows app and game compatibility, better graphics in the reviewed comparisons, or Thunderbolt 4. It is not faster in every task: a 2026 review says raw CPU performance may favor Snapdragon, and the tested Intel business model has cooling and power-adapter limits under sustained load. The comparisons also involve different generations and product lines, not identical consumer laptops.
Which Surface Laptop 15 configurations are being compared?
There are two distinct comparisons behind the Intel-versus-Snapdragon question. Notebookcheck’s March 2025 review compares a 15-inch Surface Laptop 7 with Intel Core Ultra 7 268V against a Snapdragon X Elite model. Microsoft’s May 2024 fact sheet describes the consumer 15-inch Surface Laptop 7th Edition with Snapdragon X Elite, Adreno graphics and a Hexagon NPU rated at 45 TOPS. Those details apply to that generation, not every later Surface Laptop. Notebookcheck’s 2025 review and Microsoft’s 2024 fact sheet provide the generation-specific details.
A separate Notebookcheck review dated October 5, 2026 covers the Surface Laptop 15 Gen 8 for Business, with Intel Core Ultra X, and compares it with Snapdragon consumer models. The Intel business configuration may be available to private buyers, but it is not simply the same consumer SKU with a different processor. Its findings should not be treated as a controlled, same-price comparison with the 2025 Surface Laptop 7. Read the Gen 8 for Business review.
Where Intel is the better fit
Compatibility with Windows apps, drivers and games
The clearest practical reason to choose Intel is avoiding the x86 compatibility concern associated with Windows on ARM. In its 2025 Surface Laptop 7 comparison, Notebookcheck reports no x86 app compatibility issues on the Intel model, unlike the ARM model. Its 2026 Gen 8 review also favors Intel for app and game compatibility.

This does not mean every app fails on Snapdragon. It means compatibility is a risk worth checking before buying if you rely on older desktop software, specialized applications, device drivers or a particular game. Confirm support for the exact app and any required peripherals with their vendors; compatibility can depend on the application, driver and version.
Graphics performance in the reviewed comparisons
Notebookcheck’s sampled game results in the 2025 comparison put Intel ahead of the Snapdragon Surface Laptop 15 in the tested cases, and its 2026 review also identifies stronger Intel GPU performance. These are review findings for specific hardware, games, settings and drivers, not proof that Intel wins every graphics workload. For gaming, check results for the games and settings you actually use rather than relying on a processor name alone.
Thunderbolt 4
The 2026 review identifies Thunderbolt 4 as an Intel-model advantage. If your setup depends on a Thunderbolt dock or peripheral, verify the port specification for the exact Surface Laptop SKU and region before purchasing; port features should not be assumed across generations or product lines.

When Snapdragon may make more sense
CPU-heavy work is not an automatic Intel win
Notebookcheck’s 2026 review allows that raw CPU performance may be better on the Snapdragon SKU. That caveat matters for compute-heavy work, but it does not cancel out Intel’s reported graphics, compatibility and Thunderbolt advantages. The better choice depends on whether your workload is CPU-bound, graphics-heavy, or dependent on software and devices that need x86 support.

Intel’s Gen 8 trade-offs under sustained load
The October 2026 Notebookcheck review notes that the tested Intel Gen 8 business laptop’s single-fan cooling limits sustained performance. It also reports that the supplied 65W adapter is insufficient under load for a short period before performance is reduced. That is relevant if you plan long, demanding CPU or GPU sessions: the Intel model’s graphics advantage in reviewed comparisons does not mean it can sustain peak performance indefinitely.
The same review praises the laptop’s build, keyboard, speakers, webcam and 120 Hz IPS display. Those are review assessments of the tested business configuration, rather than evidence that every Surface Laptop 15 SKU has identical components.
Quick Recap
How to choose between Intel and Snapdragon
- Choose Intel if: a specific x86 application, driver or game is essential; graphics performance in the reviewed comparisons matters; or you need Thunderbolt 4 on the precise SKU you are considering.
- Consider Snapdragon if: your essential apps and peripherals are confirmed to work, and your priority includes its potential raw CPU performance or the battery results Microsoft reports for its Snapdragon model.
- Check before buying: the exact generation, consumer or business status, processor, graphics, ports, local configuration and current price. No matching current regional price pair is established here, and business-model pricing may not be competitive with the Snapdragon consumer offering.
