Before buying a discounted “lifetime” software license, verify the exact product and edition, who is selling it, what rights the license grants, and how the publisher will recognize your entitlement. “Lifetime” alone does not tell you whether the offer includes future versions, updates, support, or transfer to another computer. Get those terms—and the seller’s refund promise—in writing before you pay.
What does “lifetime” mean for a software license?
It is a marketing label, not a complete description of the rights you are buying. Depending on the written terms, it might mean you can use one version indefinitely, while upgrades, support, or online services are limited or excluded. Ask the seller to define the duration and scope in writing, then compare that promise with the publisher’s terms for the exact product and region.
For example, Microsoft’s terms say Microsoft is not obligated to provide support under that agreement, and that updates may not include or support every feature or peripheral. That is a Microsoft-specific example, not a rule for every publisher.
- Does “lifetime” cover only the version named in the offer, or future major versions too?
- Are security updates included, and for how long?
- Does it include technical support, cloud features, or other online services?
- Whose lifetime is meant, and what happens if the publisher discontinues the product or service?
Is the seller authorized, and what kind of license is being sold?
Identify the legal seller—not just the marketplace where the listing appears—and check its business details, invoice process, refund policy, and support contact. Where the publisher offers an official store or reseller directory, use it to verify the seller for the specific product and territory. Ask whether the entitlement is retail, OEM, volume, education, refurbished, or another license category; rights can differ by category.

A listing on a marketplace, a low price, or a key that activates does not by itself establish that the publisher recognizes your entitlement. Microsoft advises buyers to purchase from Microsoft or a trusted store and notes that online auction purchases are among the contexts in which counterfeit Windows software can be encountered. Authorization can also be program-specific. For example, Microsoft says a Cloud Solution Provider (CSP) indirect reseller must be authorized in Partner Center before transacting through a distributor. That requirement describes Microsoft’s CSP program; it is not a universal reseller directory or a test of every seller.

What devices, users, and transfers does the license allow?
Match the license to how you plan to use it: number of people and devices, operating system, personal or business use, and country. Confirm whether it is tied to a device, account, or user; whether reinstalling or replacing hardware is allowed; and whether a transfer or resale needs publisher approval.
Microsoft’s guidance for one-time-purchase Office licenses says those products install on one PC or Mac and explains transfer limitations for Office 2024 and Office 2021. Its process for transfers to another person in the European Economic Area (EEA) asks Microsoft to verify rights and reassign the entitlement. These rules are specific to the Office products and circumstances covered by Microsoft’s guidance.

Adobe’s license-transfer policy illustrates why the product’s own rules matter: educational Adobe-branded products are not eligible for transfer, OEM versions generally cannot be transferred except in Germany, and attached support contracts do not transfer. Adobe requires forms from both the transferor and recipient and says processing can take three to four weeks. Do not assume these Adobe rules apply to another vendor.
How will activation and ongoing access work?
Ask where you will download the software, how activation works, whether the publisher account will display the entitlement, and what to do if you change hardware or lose account access. Microsoft explains that Windows activation checks whether software is being used only on PCs allowed by its terms; activation associates a key or digital entitlement with hardware, and validation can fail for counterfeit software. Activation is a technical check, not conclusive proof that the seller transferred valid license rights to you. Confirm the entitlement through the publisher’s official channels and keep your transaction evidence.

Also check whether continued access depends on an account, region, internet connection, or periodic license refresh. Microsoft’s digital-goods rules describe conditions that can affect access in services covered by those terms and generally restrict transfer or resale except where permitted. Those are Microsoft’s rules and should not be generalized to other publishers.
What happens if the key fails or the license is revoked?
Before paying, establish who handles a rejected key, revoked entitlement, or other activation problem: the seller, the publisher, or both. Read the refund window and cancellation terms, and save dated copies of the listing, written license description, invoice, seller messages, and promised refund terms. A seller’s remedy and your rights under local consumer law are separate from the publisher’s license terms; the outcome depends on the jurisdiction and transaction. Microsoft’s terms note that buyers may have rights against the seller and under local law.

Check whether the offer is truly a one-time license or is actually a subscription or recurring service. In June 2024, the FTC announced allegations in a pending case concerning Adobe subscription-plan disclosures, cancellation obstacles, and an early termination fee described as 50 percent of remaining monthly payments. The FTC said the court would decide the case. Those allegations concern subscription disclosures; they are not a finding about discounted lifetime licenses or evidence of how often such licenses are invalid.

Do not rank offers by the word “lifetime” or the upfront price alone. Compare the terms that determine the value and usability of each entitlement:
- Total cost over the period you expect to use the software.
- Exact product, edition, and version, plus any upgrade rights.
- How long updates and support are included, if at all.
- Permitted users and devices, including rules for reinstalling or replacing hardware.
- Transfer and reactivation requirements.
- Account, internet, and regional restrictions.
- Seller authorization for that product and territory.
- Refund terms if activation fails or the publisher does not recognize the entitlement.
Pre-purchase checklist
- Identify the offer: record the exact product, edition, version, license category, territory, and number of users or devices.
- Verify the seller: check its legal identity and, where available, the publisher’s official reseller information for the specific product and region.
- Get “lifetime” in writing: ask whether it applies to use of one version, future upgrades, updates, support, or online services, and for how long.
- Confirm scope and transfer rules: check device limits, account or hardware ties, business-use restrictions, reinstall rights, and any approval needed to transfer the license.
- Check access and activation: find out where the download comes from, how the publisher records the entitlement, and what happens after hardware or account changes.
- Review remedies: save the listing and terms, confirm who resolves activation or entitlement problems, and note the refund deadline.
These checks are general consumer information, not verification of any particular reseller, listing, serial number, key, or lifetime offer. Publisher terms and consumer remedies vary by product and jurisdiction; review the current terms for the exact product and region before buying.
