What’s actually slowing this PC down?

No—Microsoft’s announcement does not say Windows 11 will change your Search preferences automatically. It describes a new control that lets you choose whether web and Microsoft Store suggestions appear alongside local results. The wider update also promises clearer result labels, improved matching, fewer promotions in web results, and other refinements, but availability depends on rollout.
What the settings change actually means
Microsoft’s July 13, 2026 announcement describes a user choice, not an automatic settings change: a new option at Settings > Privacy & Security > Search lets you choose whether web and Microsoft Store suggestions appear alongside local results. The announcement does not say Windows will change that preference on your behalf.
That control concerns what Search shows. It is separate from Windows Search indexing settings, which determine what locations and file information Windows catalogs to help find files.
What Microsoft says is changing in Search
The announced work combines changes to how Search looks, matches queries, ranks results, and behaves. Microsoft describes intended improvements; it does not publish a measured speed increase or quantified performance result.

A less cluttered results experience
- A simplified Search home is intended to make recent searches easier to revisit.
- Labels will more clearly identify whether a result is an app, setting, file, web result, or Microsoft Store suggestion.
- Microsoft says promotional content will be removed from web results, with the most relevant answer shown instead of related products and promotions first.
More emphasis on useful local matches
- Apps, settings, and files should rank higher when they are a stronger match than web or Store suggestions.
- System items such as This PC and Recycle Bin should be easier to discover.
- File matching is intended to work better for searches as short as two characters and to include cloud or connected files when they are the stronger match.
More forgiving searches and reliability work
- App search is intended to handle typos, missing or extra letters, and partial words. Microsoft’s example is typing “utlook” to find Outlook.
- Microsoft says it is making reliability improvements to reduce crashes and loading issues.
- The announcement also describes an initial round of improvements to Settings-result ranking, with further tuning planned.
Who can get the overhaul, and when?
When Microsoft announced the changes on July 13, 2026, it said they were gradually rolling out to Windows Insiders in the Experimental channel through Controlled Feature Rollout. Not every Insider would see them immediately, and experiences could vary by region. Microsoft’s announcement did not confirm general availability for all Windows 11 users.
Windows Central reported that broader availability was expected later in 2026, but that was a reported expectation, not a Microsoft guarantee: Windows Central’s July 13, 2026 report.

Microsoft’s Windows 11 version 26H2 documentation also describes related Search features, including previews without opening results, app search that handles typos and partial names, clearer result labels, and automatic indexing of frequently used folders. That documentation does not establish that every improvement or the new web-and-Store suggestion control had reached every Windows 11 device. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 version 26H2 documentation.
How to manage indexing separately
Search indexing catalogs information such as file names, paths, content, and metadata, then updates in the background as files change. Microsoft provides controls to manage indexed locations and choose whether file types are indexed by properties alone or by properties plus content. Enhanced indexing covers the whole PC and may use more system resources. These controls are distinct from the new preference for web and Store suggestions. Details are in Microsoft Support’s guide to Search indexing in Windows.

What to take away
The overhaul is a bundle of Search refinements, not a documented automatic reset of your preferences. The central choice is whether Search should show web and Microsoft Store suggestions alongside local results; the setting is for users to control. The announced rollout began with Experimental-channel Insiders, so do not assume the full set of changes is available on every Windows 11 PC.
Microsoft’s post was co-authored by Jeff Petty (Windows) and Anderson Aiziro (Bing Search). They described the goal this way: “You’ve been asking for search that is faster, more relevant, and easier to use—whether you’re opening an app, finding a file, or changing a setting.” Read Microsoft’s announcement.
