Update X.Org Server through your Linux distribution’s supported package manager and official repositories, then follow that distribution’s security advisory and restart instructions. There is no single update command or universal package version for every Linux system: distributions can use different package numbers and may backport fixes.

Why the update depends on your Linux distribution

X.Org is made up of independently released modules rather than one whole-system X11 package stream that every distribution updates at the same time. The X.Org release notes describe updates to individual modules, and the X.Org versioning guide explains that each module has its own version number. For the server, the xorg-server module version is more useful than an umbrella X11 label.

Your distribution may also apply a fix to its own package without using the same version string as the upstream X.Org release. For example, the Ubuntu security notice lists package versions separately for supported Ubuntu releases. Check the notice for your exact distribution and release instead of deciding whether you are protected by comparing package numbers alone.

Safe update procedure

  1. Identify your distribution and release. Use your system’s release information and consult that distribution’s official package documentation. The correct package name, command and update process depend on the system.
  2. Check the matching X.Org or X server security notice. Confirm which package is affected and what fixed package version applies to your release. Follow the distribution’s explanation of its package versioning and backports.
  3. Update from the supported repositories. Use the package manager and repositories recommended by your distribution. Avoid untrusted repositories and third-party X.Org modules: the X.Org release notes warn that loadable server modules run with server privileges.
  4. Keep local configuration in mind. If you maintain a custom /etc/X11/xorg.conf or files under /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d, note those changes and consult the relevant driver documentation if behavior changes. Many users do not need a main X.Org configuration file, but custom configuration snippets are supported.
  5. Apply the update and follow restart guidance. Use the procedure and restart or reboot instructions in your distribution’s advisory. The cited Ubuntu notice instructs users to reboot after the standard system update; that guidance should not be assumed to apply identically to every distribution.
  6. Check the desktop afterward. Confirm that the graphical session starts and that your display arrangement, input devices and any essential accelerated graphics work as expected. If something fails, consult your distribution’s logs and the documentation for the relevant driver.

What the current X.Org security notice says

As of October 7, 2026, the X.Org security advisory index lists July 8, 2026 issues affecting X.Org X server versions earlier than 21.1.24 and Xwayland versions earlier than 24.1.13; it lists xorg-server 21.1.24 and Xwayland 24.1.13 as fixed. These are upstream thresholds, not a demand that every distribution package display those exact version strings. Check your distribution’s notice for the package and release you actually use.

The July 8 entry names CVE-2026-55999 and CVE-2026-56000. For details about their impact and affected configurations, use the individual advisory linked from the index rather than inferring exposure from the CVE names or version numbers alone.

Why compiling X.Org is not the normal desktop update route

Building X.Org Server from source is not a universal shortcut to a safer update. X.Org releases individual modules, and its release documentation says module interfaces can change without notice. A source build therefore involves more than choosing a single “latest X11” version: it requires managing the relevant module set and compatibility with the rest of the system. For an ordinary desktop update, use the distribution’s packaged update path; source builds are a specialized maintenance choice.
