None is a universal privacy switch: turning off model improvement does not erase existing chats, and deleting a chat may not remove a file saved separately in Library.
Quick checklist before you upload an image
- Turn off model improvement if you do not want new personal-account conversations used to train models. Go to Settings → Data controls → Improve the model for everyone and switch it off.
- Check Memory and personalization. Go to Settings → Personalization to review available Memory controls and remove saved memories you no longer want.
- Use Temporary Chat when you do not want the conversation in ordinary history or to create memories. Choose it before sending the first message, and select Personalized or Unpersonalized as appropriate.
- Check Library separately if you need to remove an uploaded file. Deleting the chat does not necessarily delete a file that remains saved there.
- If this is a work or school account, check workspace rules. An administrator may control feature availability and retention.
These controls do different jobs. OpenAI says prompts, responses, images, and files may be used to improve models depending on settings; it does not say every uploaded image is always used. See Data controls in ChatGPT and the model-training setting details.
What each setting changes

Turn off model improvement for new conversations
On the web, while signed in, open the account menu, select Settings, then Data controls, and turn off Improve the model for everyone. On iOS or Android, open the sidebar, tap the profile icon, select Data controls, and turn off the same setting. OpenAI says this account setting applies across devices.
With the setting off, new conversations are not used to train models, but saved regular chats can still remain in history. OpenAI also says that if you submit feedback using thumbs up or thumbs down, the conversation associated with that feedback may be used for training even after opting out. Use Temporary Chat with the right personalization choice
Start a new chat and select Temporary before sending your first message. Choose Personalized if you want the temporary conversation to be able to use existing Memory, custom instructions, and plugins; choose Unpersonalized if you do not. That choice cannot be changed after the conversation starts. Neither option creates or updates Memory while the chat remains temporary. See Temporary Chat FAQ.
- A Temporary Chat does not appear in ordinary chat history and is not used for model improvement while it remains temporary.
- OpenAI says it may keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety. That is an operational retention period, not a promise of immediate deletion.
- If you save a Temporary Chat, it becomes a regular chat and ordinary account settings apply.
- If a GPT action sends information to a third party, that recipient’s privacy policy applies to the data it receives, and the recipient may retain it longer.
Review Memory separately from model improvement
Open Settings → Personalization to review the Memory controls available for your account and inspect or remove saved memories. Depending on plan and region, Memory may draw on past chats, saved memories, custom instructions, Library files, or connected apps. It does not necessarily preserve every detail, and its summary may omit information. OpenAI explains the controls in Memory FAQ.

Deleting a chat does not automatically delete a memory saved from it. Remove the memory separately if you do not want it used for personalization. Memory and model improvement are distinct controls, and turning off Memory or personalization does not disable all safety processing: OpenAI says limited safety-relevant context may be used in rare, high-risk situations.
Deleting a chat is not always deleting the image
Regular and archived chats remain saved until deleted or removed under a workspace retention policy; archiving does not change retention. Deleting a saved chat removes it from your account view immediately. OpenAI says it schedules permanent deletion within 30 days, except when content has already been de-identified or must be kept longer for security or legal reasons. Library files can be stored separately from chats. If an image is saved in Library and you want it removed, delete that copy there too; deleting the conversation alone may leave it in place.

OpenAI says content from ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, and ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces is not used to train models by default. Workspace administrators may set retention rules and limit available features, so personal-account instructions may not match a managed account. Ask your administrator which policies apply.

Choose based on the privacy question you need to answer
- “Can this new conversation be used to improve models?” Review Improve the model for everyone; for Temporary Chat, its temporary status also affects model-improvement treatment.
- “Will this conversation be in my usual history?” Use Temporary Chat if you do not want it in ordinary history. Turning off model improvement alone does not hide or delete saved chats.
- “Can ChatGPT personalize this chat using information it remembers?” Review Memory and choose the appropriate Temporary Chat personalization option before starting.
- “Will the uploaded image be removed if I delete the chat?” Check whether it remains separately in Library and remove it there if needed.
- “Do these personal settings govern my account?” Confirm workspace policy if you use a managed account; administrator rules can affect retention and feature availability.
