A slow PS5 emulator or a game that will not boot does not automatically mean your PC is too weak. PS5 emulation projects are experimental, and support varies by game, emulator build, operating system, and graphics driver. Check the exact game’s compatibility status and the emulator’s requirements before changing settings or buying hardware.
Why a PS5 game may run slowly or fail to start
The emulator may not support that game yet
PS5 emulation remains early-stage. KytyPS5 warns that behavior can change significantly between builds and lists crashes, graphical glitches, low compatibility, and poor performance among possible problems. It says it can boot 2D games and a selection of 3D games; that does not mean a particular title will work. Check the KytyPS5 project page and its community compatibility list for the exact game.
A compatibility report is tied to the build and test setup behind it. A title reported as booting on one version or PC may behave differently on another. Also distinguish between reaching a boot screen, getting into a game, and running it stably; these are not equivalent results.
Graphics API or driver requirements may be unmet
KytyPS5 specifies a GPU capable of Vulkan 1.3 and current graphics drivers. SharpEmu also requires a Vulkan-capable GPU and current driver, and notes that performance and compatibility vary by game, operating system, and GPU driver. These are prerequisites, not promises of a particular frame rate or proof that a supported game will run well.

If the GPU does not support the required Vulkan version, or the driver is outdated, the emulator may fail to initialize graphics or render incorrectly. Confirm the current requirements on the relevant project’s official SharpEmu page or KytyPS5 page; requirements and support can change as projects develop.
The project may still be building core functionality
SharpEmu describes its current focus as “accuracy and infrastructure setup rather than game-specific compatibility.” That is the project’s own status statement, not an independent speed test. A crash or low performance can reflect missing or unfinished emulator functionality, not a setting that a user can fix.

How to diagnose the problem
- Confirm that the emulator targets PS5. Check the official project page. shadPS4 is a PS4 emulator, so its setup instructions and game requirements do not diagnose a PS5 title. RPCSX describes PS4/PS5 experimentation, but its FAQ says game booting from its virtual shell is still in progress.
- Write down the exact game and emulator build. Include the title and version or build number, then check the project’s current compatibility list and title-specific issue reports. Do not treat a report for a different build as a guarantee.
- Compare your PC with the project’s current requirements. Check the supported operating system, whether the GPU supports the required Vulkan version, and whether its driver is current. KytyPS5’s documented GPU requirement is Vulkan 1.3; SharpEmu calls for a Vulkan-capable GPU.
- Update the graphics driver if the project recommends it, then retest. KytyPS5 advises updating the driver before reporting rendering problems. Retest the same game on the same emulator build so the change and result are clear.
- Save the complete log and look for an existing report. SharpEmu documents the
--log-to-filelaunch option. KytyPS5 asks users to search existing issues and include the tested version and complete log using its Game Emulation Status Report template. - Report a reproducible failure through the project’s official channel. Include your operating system, hardware, game, emulator version, steps to reproduce, what happened, and the complete log. These details help distinguish a title-specific limitation from a graphics initialization or driver problem.
When is a PC upgrade relevant?
First check whether your existing GPU supports the Vulkan version the emulator requires. A GPU that lacks the needed API may be a genuine compatibility barrier. However, the project documentation does not establish a recommended graphics card model, nor does it show that a GPU or CPU upgrade will make an unsupported game playable.
The reviewed official project pages do not publish standardized, comparable performance benchmarks using the same test PC and reproducible frame-rate measurements. Vulkan 1.3 is a KytyPS5 graphics API requirement, not a performance target. Individual gameplay demonstrations or user reports should not be treated as representative benchmarks.

Avoid fixes that are not supported by evidence
- Do not assume a generic graphics tweak will fix a crash; use project documentation or a reproducible report for your game and build.
- Do not buy a faster CPU or GPU before checking compatibility and the current graphics requirements.
- Do not use PS4 emulator instructions to troubleshoot a PS5 game. For example, shadPS4’s quick start applies to a PS4 emulator.
- Use official project repositories and verify release links and checksums. The RPCS5 download page inspected lists nonzero archive sizes alongside SHA-256 values beginning with
e3b0c442, the standard digest of an empty file. That discrepancy is a reason not to rely on its advertised downloads or requirements as vetted recommendations; it does not, by itself, establish malware or prove the status of every file.
What to check first
Start with the exact game’s status for your emulator build, then confirm the operating system, Vulkan capability, and driver. If those checks do not explain the issue, capture the complete log and report the reproducible steps to the official project. Without the game, build, PC details, driver version, error, and log, there is not enough information to identify one specific cause.
