Choose an expansion SSD by the exact handheld model, then match its documented drive size, interface and supported capacity. There is no universal “handheld SSD”: the original ROG Ally uses an M.2 2230 drive, while Lenovo’s Legion Go 8ASP2 specifies M.2 2242. If you would rather not replace the internal drive, a compatible microSD card may be an option.
Start with the exact handheld model
Identify the model and generation from the device’s system information, label or purchase record before shopping. Similar names do not guarantee the same SSD slot: Lenovo’s Legion Go 8ASP2 and Legion Go 2, for example, document different supported M.2 lengths. Check the manufacturer’s specifications or service documentation for your precise model and configuration.
Match the SSD’s physical size and interface
M.2 describes a drive family, not one universal physical length. A drive can be M.2 and still be too long or otherwise incompatible with a handheld. Confirm the drive’s length and its interface together in the manufacturer’s documentation.

Decide between an internal SSD and removable storage
Internal SSD replacement
An internal replacement can increase built-in storage, but it requires opening the device and migrating or reinstalling software. The exact procedure depends on the handheld; follow its current manufacturer service documentation. Check warranty terms for your country rather than assuming user installation has the same effect everywhere.
MicroSD expansion
A compatible microSD card can add removable storage without replacing the internal SSD. Reader support varies by device, so check the card types and reader standard listed for your model:

A faster interface printed on a card’s packaging does not guarantee that a particular handheld will deliver that speed. Match the card to the reader standard documented for your device.
