Tortoises and turtles are both chelonians, but their everyday care can be very different. Tortoises live on land; many animals called turtles live in water or split their time between water and land. “Turtle” may also be used as a broad term for the whole group, so the species—not the label alone—determines the right habitat, food, temperature, and lighting.
What is the difference between a tortoise and a turtle?
In common biological and pet-care usage, a tortoise is a land-living chelonian. “Turtle” is less precise: it can refer broadly to chelonians, or specifically to aquatic and semi-aquatic species. That overlap means the words are not used identically everywhere. For practical care, identify the animal’s species before choosing an enclosure or diet.
How do their habitats differ?
Tortoises live on land
A tortoise needs a terrestrial enclosure suited to its species, including appropriate temperatures, humidity, space, and lighting. It does not need an aquatic turtle’s swimming tank. Merck Veterinary Manual’s selected-species table, for example, describes Greek tortoises as terrestrial and temperate to subtropical. Those descriptions apply to the named example, not every tortoise.
Many turtles need water and a dry basking area
Aquatic and semi-aquatic turtles need suitable swimming water as well as a dry place to climb out and bask. VCA Animal Hospitals describes aquatic housing with water, a dry basking area, heat, and UV light. It also advises owners to use filtration or be prepared to change the water weekly. These aquarium requirements should not be applied to a land tortoise.

Examples show why species matters
Merck’s selected-reptile husbandry table lists a minimum water depth of 30 cm (12 inches) and a land area equal to one-third of the tank for red-eared sliders. These are table entries for that species, not general rules for all turtles. The right enclosure depends on the animal’s identity and needs.
How does diet differ?
Tortoises are herbivorous
Tortoises are herbivores, and plant material supports healthy gut function. Merck discusses both formulated diets and plants, but the appropriate diet depends on factors such as the animal’s size and context. A single pellet, vegetable list, or supplement should not be assumed to meet the needs of every tortoise species.

Many freshwater turtles eat animal matter and plants
Many freshwater turtles eat primarily animal matter in the wild, while also eating some plant material. Feeding patterns can change with age: Merck notes that some species are carnivorous when young and shift toward omnivorous or herbivorous diets as adults. VCA gives the red-eared slider as an example—juveniles are mainly carnivorous, while adults become more omnivorous. Do not use that pattern as a universal rule for all turtles.
What care does each need?
Care cannot be prescribed from the word “turtle” or “tortoise” alone. Temperature, humidity, lighting, food, hibernation, enclosure dimensions, and maintenance vary by species. Merck’s table marks broad-spectrum UVB as essential for its listed tortoise and aquatic-turtle examples; VCA also includes UV light in aquatic turtle housing. Match the fixture and enclosure setup to the species rather than choosing equipment by label alone.

Merck’s examples illustrate how specific the figures can be: it lists Greek tortoises with a preferred optimal temperature zone of 20–28°C (68–82°F) and humidity of 30–50%. For red-eared sliders, its table lists an air temperature range of 22–27°C (72–81°F), a minimum water depth of 30 cm (12 inches), and land area equal to one-third of the tank. These are species-specific husbandry entries, not universal targets.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose the right setup
- Identify the species. Do not rely on the generic label “turtle” or “tortoise.”
- Confirm its habitat needs. Determine whether it needs a land enclosure, swimming water, or both, and whether it requires a dry basking area.
- Check diet and life stage. Confirm what the species eats and whether feeding changes as it matures.
- Set the environment for that species. Verify temperature, humidity, UVB, and enclosure requirements with current veterinary guidance.
- Plan maintenance. For aquatic turtles, include filtration or regular water changes in the care plan.
Use veterinary references for an initial comparison, then seek species-specific advice from a veterinarian experienced with reptiles. A general care label cannot settle the details for an individual animal.
