Reconnect the VPN and restart the affected app after changing a rule. If the rule is domain-based, investigate DNS; if it is app-based, check for platform restrictions, kill-switch conflicts, or software that interferes with routing.
First identify what is going wrong
Split tunneling is a routing policy: some traffic uses the VPN while other traffic uses the ordinary network connection. But VPN products can implement it with application rules, IP routes, or domain rules, and those approaches are not interchangeable. Microsoft’s explanation of routes and physical-interface traffic applies to the built-in Windows VPN platform, not every commercial VPN app. Microsoft Learn explains Windows VPN routing decisions.
Before changing settings, write down the VPN provider and app version, operating system and version, VPN protocol, the app or domain in the rule, and whether you intend to include or exclude it. Then describe the symptom precisely:
- The app cannot connect: it may be routed the wrong way, blocked by the VPN’s protection policy, or need a restart after the rule change.
- The excluded app still sees a VPN address: check whether the rule was actually applied and whether it matches the app’s traffic.
- The app unexpectedly sees your ISP-facing address: that may be the intended effect of an exclusion, though DNS behavior can differ.
- A domain resolves or connects incorrectly: check the exact domain pattern and whether DNS caching or another resolver is affecting the rule.
- All traffic seems to use one connection: confirm that the rule type and mode match your intent; on Windows’ built-in VPN, a force-tunnel configuration sends all traffic through the VPN.
Check that your VPN supports the rule you want
Feature availability can depend on the operating system, app type, distribution, and VPN protocol. Check the provider’s current documentation for your exact client rather than assuming that a setting available on one device works the same way on another.

Also confirm the rule’s mode. In exclude mode, selected traffic bypasses the tunnel; in include mode, only selected traffic goes through it. A list of applications, a route or subnet list, and a domain list describe different kinds of traffic and may not be available in the same client.
Reapply the rule, then reconnect and restart
A saved rule may not affect an already-open app or an existing VPN session. Follow the provider’s instructions for applying changes; where required, reconnect the VPN, then close and reopen the affected app. Proton says reconnecting is required after changes on macOS and Android TV, and its Linux GUI instructions call for reconnecting and restarting apps that were already open. Mozilla also notes that some excluded apps need to be restarted after the VPN is turned on. These requirements are product-specific, so verify them for your client. For domain rules, check DNS and the match pattern
Make sure the rule matches the hostname the app actually uses, including relevant subdomains. Prefer the narrowest accurate pattern: a broad domain pattern can capture unrelated services that share infrastructure.
Domain-based routing can depend on the VPN client seeing a DNS lookup and using the resulting IP address to create a route. Cloudflare documents that its desktop clients dynamically add a domain’s resolved IP to the routing table after resolution. If the operating system already has a cached result, or browser secure DNS or another resolver intercepts the lookup, the client may not learn that IP and may not add the expected route. In enterprise VPNs using split DNS, check that the DNS policy and servers fit the intended include or exclude behavior. Cisco documents platform differences, limitations on Linux, and conditions affecting macOS. It also notes that command-line tools such as dig and nslookup are not covered in the same way as applications using the operating system’s native resolver. Check kill-switch behavior and conflicting software
Do not assume a kill switch and split tunneling work together on every platform. Proton says its split-tunneling feature is incompatible with its kill switch on most platforms, while Windows supports its Standard or Advanced kill switch alongside split tunneling. Check the compatibility note for your own provider and platform before changing a protection setting. Proton VPN compatibility details

An excluded app’s IP address and DNS path can also differ. NordVPN documents a case where an excluded app sees the ISP’s IP address while the computer continues to use NordVPN DNS. That mismatch can make an app appear to have a routing problem even when the exclusion is taking effect. NordVPN’s split-tunneling troubleshooting notes
If you use Mozilla VPN on Windows, Mozilla specifically lists Intel Connectivity Performance Suite, Intel Killer Control Center services, Kaspersky, and Proxifier as possible sources of interference with app exclusions. Its guidance also suggests restarting the computer if exclusions behave unexpectedly after Mozilla VPN v2.33. Understand route behavior on Windows’ built-in VPN
For the Windows VPN platform, Microsoft says that specified routes go over the VPN and other traffic uses the physical interface. It describes force tunneling as the configuration in which all traffic goes over the VPN; if no routes are specified, force tunneling is the default. Default routes can also be installed with a lower metric than routes on other interfaces. This can explain why traffic appears fully tunneled when the route policy is missing or misconfigured, but it should not be assumed to describe a third-party VPN app’s implementation. Use reset or reinstall steps only after simpler checks
If the platform, mode, rule, DNS behavior, and reconnect steps are correct, consult the provider’s current recovery instructions for your app version. NordVPN lists resetting the application, reinstalling it, and resetting the network among its remedies. A network reset is a disruptive step: NordVPN says it removes saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords and resets VPN and APN settings. Do not use it without being prepared to restore those settings.
